Honestly, it's hard to describe just how good this book is. It takes a look at what it means to be human in some regards and strives to push us passed just simply looking at things from one bias perspective. The development of the main character throughout this book was great; it really gave life to what could happen when you're isolated from most human interactions for too long. The underlying plot of the novel has real depth to it showing just how hard change can be to accomplish.

I'm not going spoil anything or say that "you the reader of this review" should buy this book. That's not how this works I just gave you my simple opinions of the book and let you judge for yourself if you decide to give it a go.

As much as I've enjoyed Wool, this work is just... sloppy. So many inconsistencies in the world, I just couldn't finish more than a fifth of it. Counting symbols in messages and then streaming *telemetry* via the same channel? Solar panels in the middle of nowhere, without a star? Spotting individual ships in an "asteroid field" - just how big the "field" is, no larger than a football field or something?

And the whole notion of things at superluminal speeds colliding with other things and leaving salvageable wreck behind? Yeah, I don't think so lol.

I enjoy this style of writing, the plot was fairly original, and I found the exploration of the characters psychology and lives interesting and well done. Just be aware that this is closer to novella length than it is a novel.

It's tough to put to words how this series of short stories makes me feel. Each one evokes a series of different emotions, but all with a common thread: is this person broken or would I do any better in his situation?

Middling for Hugh Howey is still a lofty standard, but nevertheless I just couldn't get into this as much as I wanted to. All the elements for a fantastic tale were there, but the seams of this serialised novel were too glaring, and the story kept stopping and starting again. Also, it's a consistent failing of the genre that the male heroes are textured and complicated, but the women are cartoonish and easily wooed. I was disappointed that "Beacon 23" suffered from this problem. The lead female character here is not 1% of Wool's iconic Juliette.

For me this story was riveting. The characters were believable showing their strengths and weaknesses; their dreams and regrets. The second book I've read by the author…I hope he writes many more.

I've been a fan for a long time, and Howey doesn't disappoint. As always, well-written, suspenseful and thought-provoking. I don't have the patience to read the installments as they come out, I have to wait for the story to be finished.

Another well written, excellent tale from Howey. Despite the seemingly slow start you're pretty quickly hooked into the lonely life inside a beacon and then you get to witness an amazing tale unravel at the hands of a great story teller.

Don't want to give away any of the plot, just read it and enjoy it

Because the author has a way of giving voice to some every day f feelings and moods, the kind we all have running in the background of our daily routines....the ending was a little dramatic, but it doesn't leave you hanging.

I have read both series, Wool and Sand. While this book is heart wrenching, exciting, and emotionally stirring, as were the others, what I appreciated most was how Howey dares to deeply examine uncomfortable subjects and unflinchingly explore unconventional solutions. He is a powerful writer and did not disappoint. I love that each being is imperfect and that we (humans) are written about truthfully, as the invasive creatures we are -- yet bulging with so much heart and potential. Beacon 23 tweaked my jaded "hope button." I can't stop thinking about it! My love for reading Hugh Howey deepened.
