— DESIGN —
I wanted to start up archery again as an adult (because I can afford to now), and I wanted my first bow to be the classic type of bow you think of when you think of archery. When my eyes came across this bow, my decision was already made for me. I love the natural wood, the beautiful curves of the riser, the simple yet elegant lines. It's an absolute beauty.
— SPECIFICATIONS —
This is a 1-piece riser (the center section where you hold it) crafted from a rich reddish hardwood maple. The limbs (top and bottom ends) are overlaid with clear maple backed and faced with a high-strength black fiberglass. It's strung with a Dacron Flemish string, for a total 58" AMO length (Archery Manufacturers Organization, an organization that sets standards for things like defining bow length).
The bow also has something called "FutureWood", Bear's manufacturing process that gives new physical properties to the wood in the handle section. Their website says, "a pressurized vacuum fills all the natural pores in the wood, increasing its weight and greatly strengthening it. After baking, the handle is no longer natural wood, but Futurewood: It is virtually impossible to warp, check, or crack. Yet, all the grain and original beauty of the natural wood are intact." Sounds pretty cool.
Search for Bear Archery's YouTube video, "How the Fred Bear Recurve Bow is Made," Parts 1 and 2. The handmade craftsmanship is a wonder to watch. Also, do a search for "Bear Grizzly Review," to see it in action by a talented archer.
— DRAW WEIGHT —
I ordered a custom bow with custom arrows online. I had initially thought I was strong enough for the #45 (45 pound) bow as it was in the middle of the #30-60 range. I was not. I was struggling to keep it steady at this tension. For reference, I am 5'10", 165 lbs, and I exercise. Luckily, I was able to exchange it for a #35 bow which is just right for me at the moment.
For any beginner, I would get tested for how much weight you can pull *before* buying it. #30 or 35 is a good starter for average built men. Ask your local archery dealer how the weight can be adjusted higher as you get stronger, but know that these types of recurves don't deviate much in terms of poundage.
— FINAL WORDS —
This is a classically beautiful recurve bow for those that want to practice Olympic style archery, or if you want to hunt animals. When you get better and stronger, you can buy a more adjustable bow in the future. Recommended.
