The process for Damascus steel predates the birth of Christ and was lost before the birth of the USA. A lot of research went into the process in the last 30 plus years as there was no written record. The process is back, in Alabama, and the steel is probably better than the original as control of the process is better understood now. I have always been interested in history and bought this knife as a collector. Every blade will vary in appearance due to the process. The blade on mine is beautifully etched showing the layers and the knife is well made and finished.

If you're looking for a hefty bowie, this isn't it. The blade is genuine damascus for all those wondering. It is a beautiful knife, it's a slasher, a stabber... a killing tool. But if you want some piece of Americana that is going to hold up in the forest... let's just say that it isn't over-built like a Western Bowie of yester-year. I put a lot of stock in durability, and I was very mislead and disappointed by what was said about this knife around the internet. If you want to kill something, or cut string, etc... this is your knife. If you want a pioneer/ mountain man knife... look elsewhere.

Very good looking BIG knife, the hefty, dark, full-tang Damascus blade was paper-slicing sharp out of the box. Overall fit, finish & workmanship excellent. The sambar stag handle is beautiful and fits my medium sized hand well, but those with larger hands might find it a little on the thin side. It comes with a very nice brown leather sheath that was of much better quality than I expected. I highly recommend, but do yourself a favor and shop it on the internet. It can be found significantly cheaper than the Amazon price.

I had one of the originals first made by Parker-Edwards back in the mid-80's when Jim Parker owned Cutlery World, which is where I bought it. It had the familiar charcoal ground damascus blade, full tang construction, and nice stag handles. It's a full size Bowie clip point design so it's a big knife and makes a statement. Being such a beautiful knife it's mainly a shelf queen, with occasional letter opening duty. But if you wanted to use this for heavy jobs it would certainly stand up to it. This Bear model is a good value as it's a lot cheaper than when the first trip hammer welded damascus appeared on the scene 30 years ago which was selling for more like $75 to $100 an inch for a blade this size.

Had one, years back. Beautiful and looked deadly...
BUT, on a deer hunt I used it to cut a 2" dia. green limb, to clear a shooting-lane. It started to de-laminate. Big chunks of the edge were suddenly missing.

Way too soft, not properly tempered.
Gave it away. Who needs a mammoth Bowie that's only fit for cutting an occasional piece of string?
