Gr. 1-3. Continuing the Read and Wonder series, which combines fictional stories with facts, Wallace follows a black bear mother and two cubs from the cubs' birth through their second summer. Pencil-and-watercolor illustrations on double-page spreads often show the mother's watchful behavior on one page and the cubs' playful actions on the other. The bears' expressive faces will enhance the fictional story. Although slight in terms of information (simply stated facts are presented at the bottom of the spread), the book does convey a sense of bears' annual patterns and their protective mothering. Mary Harris Veeder
"Full of facts and surprises... a distinguished array of artists and authors, and a (narrative) approach more serendipitous than eneyclopaedic. Each book has an entirely original slant on its subject." The Guardian; "The best information books are so interesting that they make you want to find out more. The Read and Wonder books do just that." Margaret Meek, Emeritus Reader, Institute of Education, University of London" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
