Beast: A Hate Story, The Beginning Kindle Edition
Once upon a time, I thought love was a fairytale.
I thought selling myself to a mafia boss was noble. So what if they called him the Beast? I grew up in rags, and he would lift me to riches. All I had to do was give him my soul.
He was punishing. Insatiable. Captivating. Nothing like I expected him to be. Each day my reality blurred, leaving me wondering if I was slave or princess.
The longer I stayed, the more I lost myself to him. Even after every cruelty the Beast visited upon me, I longed for his touch. Even after every savage word he spoke, I begged for his lips. I thought the worst thing he could take was my body. I was too naïve to guard my heart.
Once upon a time, I thought love was a fairytale.
Now I know better than to speak of happily ever afters.

Frankie grew up sleeping in a small bed very similar to Harry Potter's, fan much? When Aneros shows up planning to kill her father for not paying his debt she gives herself in exchange. No time limit, no negotiating, just a straight up swap. The big, bad mafia guy, Anteros, controls Frankie by making her sexually aroused and leaving. They almost never actually have sex. He tricks her into relaxing and enjoy dancing with him only to actually drop her to the floor, twice. Half of his money comes from selling women to the "Institute" to be auctioned off to perverts so it's hard to imagine him having a good side. He plots with his henchmen to kill her if he doesn't kill her before the New Year. They decide to all kill "a girl" to celebrate the New Year when the ball drops.
I've never read a book from MC Gebhard before. Let alone one with a premise indicative to literary classics like: Anastasia and Beauty and the Beast.
Loved her take on it. You may think you know what's going on--going in; but you don't. As was the case for me. I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns throughout the book.
This story is built around immense hate. The hate Frankie and Beast have for one another. The storyline doesn't wax poetic. Nor is filled with traditional hearts, and flowers most romance books garner. No. Hate is the name of the game.
Frankie's gotten herself in trouble (or rather her father owes a debt). She faces an untimely fate as Beasts slave. Sounds awful, I know. But the truth is Frankie is badass. Which is what I loved about her character. She didn't complain, or bow down to her fate. No. Frankie was tough as nails. Smart, intelligent. Knowing full well how to put a knife through Beasts heart if she really wanted. Beast, on the other hand...yeah..he was as surly as they come. A cruel, dark alpha in every sense of the word:
"You are not a prisoner...you're nothing."
He treated Frankie coldly. But then the calm, cool, collected no nonsense character Frankie was, wouldn't put up with it and fought back.
Essentially, causing Anteros (Beast) to peel back his layers. Hate turned to love. Or something remotely close to it; Frankie and Beasts' love was beyond unusual. Definitely not in the traditional sense. Still you want more. It sucks you in from start to finish.
If you're not into dark mafia type of reads this might not be the book for you. However, I will say I'm typically not drawn to books these books either. Still I loved every bit of this story. Also, disclaimer: this book has a cliffhanger (thought I should warn you about that). Despite that, it's totally worth reading. You won't regret it!

Frankie is the kinda female that I love. She is feisty and full of surprises. You can guarantee that she does not just accept her fate, she fights Beast every step of the way until lust trumps her rage. Beast is a strange man, he is so full of hate and at the beginning, I didn't think he had it in him to love. Mary loves to keep the reader guessing.
Now, the only character I had a hard time connecting with, is Crazy A. Frequently we are reminded of him and Anteros' past in which the other wolves know nothing of, so this left me with questions. I'm sure these will be answered in Beauty.
The historic journal was fascinating too, I always love a piece of the history coming to light. It deepens the plot, and essentially creates another POV. I'm itching to get onto Beauty now so apologies if this review makes no sense!
Beast was just abusive and controlling. Cant really say I liked him. Frankie was strong but to be honest obviously was suffering from Stockholm syndrome.
How can you fall in love with someone who smacks you, abuses and bullies you.
I was just skimming the pages in the end just so I could finish it but wont be buying the next one regardless of the cliffhanger.
