From the Author

FROM EVE RABI:

As you've probably read in my blog, I wrote GRINGA in 2009 after a nightmare.

Yeah, I know what you're going to say - sounds clichéd, the whole nightmare thing has been done etc. etc., but here's the thing:

I was so terrified after that nightmare, I couldn't go back to sleep.

The drug lord's shooting, the bullet that came my way, (I saw it as it hurtled toward me) was so real and so terrifying, that it took days for me to get over the horrible dream.

I stopped writing Captured, which I was busy on, and started writing Gringa.

It took me a year to write Gringa, and the feedback I got about Payton's character from my writing group, which consisted of authors - they didn't like her character.

Too feisty, too rude and she had no filter, they complained.

Mm. I was in a bind. Should I change her character, I wondered? Make her more likable?

But after much thought, I decided not to. Payton was so strong in my mind and so entertaining without a filter, that I had to chance it and let her be.

Now, just about every single reader tells me that they love Payton's character.
I am glad I did not listen to my writing group on that aspect.

As for Diago, I hated the a-hole in the beginning, but I, like Payton, grew to love him.
In the original ending, which I changed after umpteen requests, I cried buckets as I wrote.

I even cried during my many re-writes! (I am a cry baby, btw.)

I enjoyed the company of every single character in Gringa, including Tongue the fargin SOB, and Christa the fargin nympho!

They all brought something to the table as many readers pointed out.

My fans have asked, so I will be publishing the original ending of Gringa, but it will be FREE to anyone who has read Gringa, free to my fans.

I will be doing that in the next couple of months, so watch my Wordpress blog and ...make sure you have fargin Kleenex.

Enjoy!

Judging from some of the reviews I've read about this book, I think readers can get so caught up in labels and genres that they can be blinded to the charms of a rollicking, roller-coaster of a ride and overall, good read. If this book was made into a movie, I could see Tarantino or Rodriquez directing it as it has all the elements of their story-telling in here, complete with humor, violence, a plot that moves at a brisk pace, characters that have, well, character and the funniest dialogue no one really says, except in their movies. Reviewers have been trying to label those two filmmakers since they started making movies: is it a comedy? a romance? action? drama..? Maybe it's all of the above but the one thing you can say about those and about this book: it's downright entertaining (and like all guilty pleasures, go ahead and feel guilty afterwards, if you must).

Okay let me start out DO NOT BUY IF YOU ARE NOT A FAN OF RAPE. But you should buy it if your wanting something different. I did get this book after I saw the cover, but I wasnt sure I would read it due to the reviews. Then again I like to mange my own opinion on a book.

So with all that I have to say I loved it so much I got number 2. It was so unique and it is a modern fairytale if you think about it. Not the Disney fairytales but the original ones. In absolutely love it.

Yes of coarse you get some holly hell parts to oh my god what the hell just happened to an ugly cry part. I have re-read then both a couple times just because.

I have also gotten other books by Eve Rabi. Truly amazing author, she had a way with words. You can feel her love for writing. Her passion comes through in every word.

Get the book you won't be disappointed. By the way you may want to get the second part. Also number 3 and 4. I haven't got the last two parts but they are on my wishlist.

Thank you for amazing books. :)

FIRST: This particular product is not a romance; there is no sex, no seduction in any form but RAPE. AND MORE RAPE. CONTINUAL RAPE.

Yes, I used caps. Why? Because I want potential buyers to know this upfront. While I firmly believe people can read whatever they wish, that choice should be based on truth, not deception. The author should have been as honest about the repeated rapes as she was about the violence. (EDIT/ADD: And no, not because I have anything against rape in books; I just wasn't prepared to read about it in this book.)

Like some of the others, I downloaded this as a freebie after reading the blurb, which is buried somewhere within the excerpt, so allow me:

A TRAGIC, MODERN-DAY LOVE STORY...
He's a ruthless, drug-lord who kills at the slightest provocation; she's a sassy, foul-mouth, twenty-one year old who takes crap from no one. Put them together and watch the sparks fly. And fists.
Add their greedy, backstabbing, amoral families to the mix and you have mayhem.
Add the FBI to the mayhem and you have tragedy.
Gringa is a modern-day, tragic love story that will have you laughing, crying, gasping and above all wishing there was more.

WARNING: This book contains language your mother would definitely NOT approve of, scorching sex scenes that may keep you up at night, unnecessary and un-called for violence and is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18 or anyone seeking world peace just yet. (18 years that is, not months. Well, months too.)
**********

So I thought, "Hmmm, interesting twist--a bit wacked, but interesting so why not?" Also, the "warning" has such a cutesy, tongue-in-cheek tone, doesn't it?

Here's "why not". As mentioned, there's no romance.

3 1/2 stars really but I rounded up because there's enough here to intrigue me and keep me reading.

This review contains minor spoilers.
I don't exactly know what to make of Gringa; it deals with serious subject matter to say the least - but the writing style is tongue in cheek - so it comes across like a politically incorrect B movie - the kind that would develop a cult following - like "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" or "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Which is why - despite my self appointed title of "the probability police" - I was able to keep reading even after the opening scene where the heroine Payton is shot 3 times in the chest at close range with a 9 mm pistol AND thrown off a cliff and not only manages to survive but does so without the intervention of a level 1 trauma center. Luckily for Payton, that bullet apparently did not blow out the back of her chest because she was able to recuperate in a tepee in the mountains of Mexico with some sort of opium administering "nurse" and her hygienic partner who spits all over the place.

The writing style is very fast paced and it makes the story seem almost surreal. Within 1 paragraph Payton is reunited with her family, wanting a steak, having a steak, asking for butter and gagging on her steak after spending months with her vegetarian caregivers. If felt like being caught in a whirlwind. The writing style, lack of detail and use of humor kept me from taking it too seriously - so the serious subject matter didn't pack the punch it could have if handled differently - which I'm assuming was intended.

I got a kick out of the arguing, pronoun abusing maids. Diablo is an interesting character.
