As a manga fan, I've drifted towards seinen (adult men's) comics and ignored shonen (boy's) comics because I've associated them with paint-by-numbers, never-ending fights/adolescent wish-fulfillment stories. Beastars was the series that made made me reconsider and start giving shonen stories a serious look before discarding them.
Full disclosure: Beastars is a story featuring anthropomorphic animals (aka "furries"). Some of you might be willing to dismiss it there, but I'd advise against it. One of the primary backdrops of the series is the conflict between carnivore and herbivore which remind many Westerners of the Disney film Zootopia. To be fair there are surface level similarities between the stories (to the point that the author of Beastars was afraid that her work would look like a derivative), but Zootopia is targeted towards children and Beastars is targeted towards teens, so you'll see some differences in nuance very early on in this first volume.
The story begin at the exclusive Cherryton Academy boarding school, with the brutal murder of a male alpaca student and member of the school drama club named Tem. This murder immediately increases the tension between the carnivore and herbivore students.
In this first volume we are introduced to our three primary characters. Legoshi is a fearsome-looking, but kind-hearted grey wolf who is a member of the Cherryton Academy Drama Club's stage crew. Louis is a popular and wealthy red deer who is the head of the drama club and its star actor. Haru is a female white dwarf rabbit who awakens some feeling within Legoshi. But is it love, or predatory instinct?
I won't go any farther into the plot as to not spoil anything, but anyone who picks up this volume is in for a treat. I've read a LOT of manga and this is one of the finest series I've ever encountered. It's funny, heartwarming, thought-provoking, and through its use of animal characters, offers a lens into the human condition. Many of the issues that exist in the world of Beastars exist in our own and are of greater relevance than ever.
This is not going to be a short series. While this is the first English volume, the series is at 14 volumes and counting in Japan. Still, it is absolutely worth the investment.

At this high school, instead of jocks and nerds, the students are divided into predators and prey.
At a high school where the students are literally divided into predators and prey, friendships maintain the fragile peace. Who among them will become a Beastar—a hero destined to lead in a society naturally rife with mistrust?
One night at Cherryton Academy, an herbivore student is brutally murdered. Among the members of the Drama Club, the herbivores’ suspicions naturally turn to their carnivore classmates… The prime suspect? Gray wolf Legoshi. But he wouldn’t hurt a fly. Or would he? Will dwarf rabbit Haru bring out the beast in him? Or are his feelings for her…something else?

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-At Cherryton Academy, the student body and faculty are made up of anthropomorphic herbivores and carnivores. With the herbivores already wary of the carnivores, tensions escalate even further between the animal classes when an alpaca named Tem is brutally murdered on campus. Large gray wolf student Legoshi wonders why distrust of carnivores has to run rampant in his world, as he struggles to keep his carnivorous side at bay. When he takes notice of a lovely upperclassman, the white dwarf rabbit Haru, Legoshi's internal battle becomes harder than ever. This is an absorbing title with a protagonist all readers can take a lesson from. Legoshi is a lovable, contemplative protagonist. This is a coming-of-age story in a unique universe, where characters deal with typical high school drama, with the dark cloud of Tem's murder adding a dash of uniqueness to the narrative. The art style will not be everyone's cup of tea, though helps the story to stand out from other manga for teens. Drawn in a sketchbook fashion, the characters occasionally come off as goofy in appearance. Such a marked difference from the typical manga art style could possibly draw in new fans and intrigue the format's devotees who are looking for something new. VERDICT This title hits just about every note. The story is smart and engrossing, and readers will be invested in the characters. Well worthy of a purchase. The third season is tentatively scheduled for 2022.α(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Now that I've read 1, 2, and 3 I'm just waiting in anticipation for Volume 4 in English now *sits fidgety in wood chair*I think its a great read, especially for someone who hasn't read manga in a while. I'm hooked to the story as well as the anime. If you're a fan of anthropomorphic animals, (or not) I think you'll find the story a bit interesting.Without spoilers its a pretty nice, "Slice of Life-esque" story... just with animals.

One of my all time favorite series, Beastars paints a society amongst civilized animals harboring uncivilized instincts. A beautifully drawn work of art that actually, and thoughtfully, capitalizes on every and any aspect you can think of in a "what if carnivorous animals had to share a peaceful society with herbivores?" What societal pressures would be placed on the carnivores, how would they work together, and after all of it, which side is really oppressed? Sprinkle in a murder and you got a tension filled drama that may be set in a high school, but focuses more on the mental turmoil of suppressing who you are. What I love most is the art; the emotional intensity exuding from squiggly, scratchy lines and bold dark tones, to the brightness of suddenly beautifully detailed scenes. The characters' expressions are well done given the complexity of each, well, animal portrayed. I love this series and can't wait to finally support the artist with a whole English set.

As both a fan and author of furry books, this is a gem I feel blessed to have come across. This book uses its furry characters wonderfully. Species are specifically chosen to make a point of personality or conflict without going too far. The characters are far deeper and fleshed out than foxes are sneaky liars because they're foxes, rabbits are kind and shy because they're rabbits, wolves are intimidating and angry because they're wolves, and so on.
I enjoy how so much time is spent focusing on the characters, learning about how they both relate to and differ from their species stereotype. I hope more furry writers explore all the possibilities they're presented with when working with animal characters and actually work on their characters instead of being lazy and short-cutting to "My hyena character is a stupid greedy mongrel and I don't need to waste time going into their backstory/ fleshing them out because that's how hyenas are commonly presented in media".

The almost dystopian yet shockingly relatable world of Beastars is one that truly has to be delved into to appreciate fully. The characters are exceptionally well-written and their interactions drive the roller-coaster that is the overarching plot. You truly won't be able to put this one down, and I don't doubt that you'll be picking up the subsequent volumes and eagerly awaiting the rest to be translated from Japanese soon thereafter! Legosi is best boye!
(It should also be noted that the first season of the Beastars anime should be hitting US Netflix in early 2020. From what I've seen of it so far it's a stellar adaptation, and in some ways out-does the manga! )

I was a big fan of when Zootopia came out. However, in the special features, there was actually a more class/race allegory that had a darker tone in the original story. BEASTARS has thus far been a pretty good approximation of what that might have been like. The basic story is a murder mystery involving the death of a popular (herbivore) actor at a high school and how this ends up reverberating through the school as now carnivores are judged more openly with suspicion. A good read, but a bit of a slow burn that really starts to pick up late in volume 1 and really starts gaining steam in the next 2 volumes. Definitely worth a look.

Different from the Netflix exclusive anime.

I watched the Netflix anime about a month ago because i had slept on it and wanted to give the manga a try because the show took me by absolute surprise, i expected some furry garbage, and instead i ended up with something akin to Zootopia mixed with George Orwell's Animal Farm, the series is rife with symbolism and interesting twists and turns, however the manga and anime are very different, the anime cut or changed a lot of the content from the manga - for better or for worse, if you watched the Netflix anime i'd highly recommend also reading the manga to continue the story (obviously) but also highlight just how many differences can actually be changed between the adaption period of a story from manga to anime, as it's not an uncommon practice to cut or change content from works like these, and this is in recent memory probably the best example of that.
Oh and the manga itself? great stuff, the art is very crude, bizarre and a little bit creepy, but it's growing on me, it's not the sleek looking art style they used for the show, instead characters look almost distorted at times and reminds me of the kind of art you sometimes see in 4 panel comic strips in the west, not bad though and i enjoy the differences, it means i can enjoy Beastars twice: as a manga, but also as an anime.
5/5

An interesting start to a unique manga

I've heard a lot about Beastars over the last year or so, so I was really excited when I found out it was going to be released in the West. I can safely say that it lived up to my expectations!
The first volume sets up an interesting story: a herbivore has been killed by one of the other carnivores at school, one he presumably trusted, and everyone is on edge. The main character, Lagoshi, is a grey wolf struggles with his carnivore instincts despite his usually gentle personality. Right away this book provides us with some intriguing story threads to follow into later volumes.
The art is sketchy and less clean than in a lot of other manga, but that adds to the expressiveness and makes the animal designs look less uncanny than if they were excessively polished.
Overall, I would definitely recommend checking out the first volume of Beastars.

Interesting world

I’m not really into murder mysteries, but a manga based round animals! I had to check this out.
Liked the world building, characters, even though I have no idea who to trust in this! Artist does some very good suspicious faces. Like the rough drawing style.
I thought the story was going to be more based round the murder, but there are a lot of underlying issues going on at this academy.
Interested to read more about Legoshi and Jack, definitely need more of Haru, and I’m even slightly intrigued about Kai.
