Beastly Crochet: 23 Critters to Wear and Love Paperback – September 18, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
Join author Brenda Anderson in her fascination with scary-cute creatures to crochet. In this collection Brenda presents 23 accessories and toys, featuring furry monsters, carnivorous plants, killer robots, and menacing tiki figures. While there are some literal monsters in the bunch--toys and amigurumi--a majority of projects are wearable accessories and garments.
Some projects, such as a robot-themed intarsia blanky, are aimed specifically at children, while many others are for adults and teens who want to have a little fun.
Brenda shows how to tackle all the sewing and appliqué techniques required in her patterns, including how to install zippers, as well as subtle tricks for achieving personality in your critters with a section on "The Principles of Cuteness." Beastly Crochet is a book that is as fun to read as it is to crochet from!

Editorial Reviews
Review
"This book if full of really awesome designs like the Sugar Skull Shoulder Bag and the Tiki Head Bolster. In addition to bags and home items, there are wearables like hats and little crochet monsters. The guys on the cover are particularly popular and a great first felting project. They are also great little organizers as they are hollow! Such a neat idea. There is also a great section on how to get your creatures/projects to look how you want." --Marly Bird Yarn Thing podcast

Also, the author answers questions on the pattern pages on Ravelry.com really quickly!
I would say the difficulty is about medium, but a determined beginner would manage too. All the patterns need some sewing at the end, but they each have clear instructions on how to do it.
The back of the book is one of the best parts of it. It has a section with photos on how to position the eyes for different expressions which is fantastic!
There is also a detailed description (with photos) on how to sew in a zipper, how to sew different crochet pieces to each other using different stitches. All the crochet and sewing stitches used in the book are described (some with drawings), which is very useful as there are a few crochet stitches that I've never seen before. The descriptions are detailed, but for the hard ones I had a search through youtube and experimented a bit which really helped.
