Copen branches out into a world that mixes Dirty Harry with Supernatural, but even that comparison doesn't seem to do Beasts of Babylon justice. I never would've though to combine the western and horror genres, but Copen did, and the result is a tense and entertaining book.
As Copen's sixth published work, Beasts of Babylon features some of her best writing. She has an uncanny knack for keeping the focus on the characters, even when the stakes and the scope are at their highest. Anastasia is a wonderful protagonist, but the supporting cast of characters really make this book shine. The heroes aren't quite as virtuous, and the villains aren't quite the dastardly sort.
Well, most of them.
I'm fascinated by horror writers, because for me, the horror genre has always been a visual one. How do they convey that fear, that tension, without the aid of visuals? Copen manages just fine, and though the horror genre isn't one of my favorites, I might have to read more if the rest of the genre is a lot like this.
Copen further establishes herself as one of my favorite indie authors with Beasts of Babylon, a wild ride that promises to be the first installment in a trilogy. I can't wait to see what's in store next for Anastasia, and this is easily in the running for the best book I've read in 2017.
Seriously, don't miss this one.
She knows who killed her the first time and she’s out for revenge. All she needs is a few more guns to back her. Unfortunately, no one will believe her. Her own husband just wants her to leave and stay gone.
I have to say right up front, I’m not a huge fan of horror. I didn’t even know this was horror until it was too late. However, I read it right through to the end without stopping. I even told my husband I couldn’t possibly go grocery shopping because I was in the middle of a ghoul attack. Yes, I was awful and read during dinner as well. I couldn’t put the book down.
I felt like I was beside Ana the entire time, going through what she did, feeling what she felt. I cheered on the outlaw as he stood by his word. I also wanted to slap the sheriff for being so dense. All in all, I believe E.A. Copen did an amazing job and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
However, this gripping and dark. Everything from the setting, the language and the characters felt authentic. The characters are entertaining and all out to benefit themselves. Ana and Christian's relationship -- both before her firey death and afterwards -- is rocky.
Ana is wreckless, and won't let anyone walk over her. She knows exactly what she is about.
Christian is sheriff of Babylon, his deceased wife is still walking around and has a bounty on her head, and he's torn about where his loyalties lie.
Jesse is a criminal through and through, but he has his own set of morals. He doesn't kill any unarmed person.
Put them together with some monsters and shake for the best UF Western horror that you never knew you wanted
I'd never really read a weird west before BoB, but I can say that if there are more like this, I will dive in wholeheartedly. E.A. Copen has set up an amazing tale and I can't wait for more.
