About the Author

Evan Dorkin is a multiple Eisner Award–winning comic book writer, creator, artist, penciller, and cover artist. He is known for Beasts of Burden, Dark Horse Presents, The Eltingville Club, The Goon, and Hellboy.

Jill Thompson is a comic book writer and artist. Thompson was educated at the American Academy of Art and has been working in the comic book industry for more than 25 years. Her first major illustration job was for Wonder Woman, and she has since worked on more than 50 titles. She is a multi-time Eisner Award winner. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

I am primarily an Evan Dorkin fan from Milk and Cheese, lo these many years. This showcases his writing ability in a new way for me and it hits good- humorous, spooky, scary. Also, quite enjoying the art style of Jill Thompson, which pairs well with the story. Give this a whirl, then put it in front of a young person who likes to read the funny books.

I really loved this graphic novel. Everything about it was fun. It is kind of like a Scooby-Doo adventure but the "detectives" are animals and instead of people with masks, the culprits are real. You deal with witches, zombies, etc. It is also a lot darker than Scooby so it is not for kids.
The book is made up of sections of issues that the town has been plagued with and this group has to fight for our safety. There are times when you'll laugh and times when you'll cry. Times when you'll hold your breath and times you'll feel disturbed. Great mix of emotions! The characterization is perfect and the artwork is awesome! Can't wait to get my hands on more of their stories.

I first came across this at my public library. As an animal lover, with a soft-spot for supernatural stories, the cover really caught my eye. The stories are simply phenomenal, and the accompanying art work amazing! Sadly, I've read that the series will not continue, so I've scoured the publisher’s website and purchased all of the comics not included in this collection. Be warned, although there is a large “cutesy” factor to the art work, the stories are anything but, and some will truly tug at your heart strings. I highly recommend!

One of those books that straddles the line between grim adulthood and childlike fancy with varied success. The illustrations are beautiful, the concept is fresh, but I agree with an early reviewer that the dialogue and character roles are a tad cliche. Understandable for a preteen Y/A graphic novel, but there are themes and gorey imagery that I would hesitate to gift to a child under 12. It's an odd balance, and I was feeling a bit ripped off until I made it midway through the relatively thin book and reached the chapter "Lost". I've reread it three times since receiving it, and it was lovely to see the series mature into something harrowing and memorable. I've since ordered the second volume, though I wish I'd known the rest of the series does not offer paperback versions, as that is my preference as a collector. I would recommend the hardcover, because Amazon doesn't seem to mind sending scratched up paperback volumes. I accounted that in the minus star along with the slightly clichéd character tropes.

If you and your preteen enjoy horror, I'd read this one together. Maybe try your hand at voicing the characters. Beware some soft naughty language and gore you should flip through yourself first, but all in all they weave some lovely unique tales involving death and resurrection and beautifully rendered animals. The imagery is realistic without jettisoning expressions like that CGI Lion King remake, and if the written humor isn't your cup of tea, then the pleasantly realistic yet humorous expressions the animals pull should still be enough to tickle your funny bone -- especially if you have pets of your own and have seen the range of expession they're capable of.

All in all, a lovely book, and if you take anything away from this volume, let it be "Lost".

I recently just started reading this series and I love it! I only wish this book had more comics in it as I could read this all day! Very easy to read on devices too! Paranormal investigations carried out by a group of dogs (and one cat) may sound cheesy but it's really good and I was hooked right away!

One of the better graphic novels I've read. Some truly scary and emotional moments, with good artwork and characters and some humor mixed in. If you read a lot of animal novels as a kid like I did, and enjoy horror too, give this a try. Some of the monsters were even pretty original.

Turns out a good comics can have talking pets investigating paranormal activities. This strangely starts out as a Disney-esque story and turns into a horror tinged wholesome adventure story. The art is so amazing. It's a fine blend of humor, drama and horror.

Die Idee mit Tieren als Hauptdarsteller im Kampf gegen das Böse gefiel mir sehr gut.
Der Autor schafft es auch ihnen Persönlichkeit und Tiefe einzuhauchen, man schliesst die Truppe recht schnell ins Herz!:)
Es findet sogar teilweise eine Charakterentwicklung der Hauptpersonen statt im Laufe der Geschichten...

Die Geschichten sind zum Teil recht heftig, also eher was für Erwachsene und nichts für Kinder,
auch wenn man vom Zeichenstil erst einmal das Gegenteil vermuten würde!
Am Besten hat mir die Geschichte gefallen, in der eine Hundemama die Jungs aufsucht und sie um Hilfe bittet, da ihre zwei Welpen verschwunden sind.
Leider ist diese Story relativ traurig, aber es gibt eine Art "Happy End", so viel sei gesagt!
