Editorial Reviews

November 1945, World War 2 is over and life in the USA appears to be returning to normal. But normality doesn't reign everywhere. A musical revolution is beginning that will eventually sow the seeds for a larger literary movement which will permeate every strata of American society: it will ultimately change thinking, behaviour and social mores across the world. The history of bebop and the Beat Movement are inextricably intertwined and this collection of poetry & prose together with tracks from jazz musicians from the 40s, 50s and early 60s reflect the powerful influence of the Beat Movement.

By Mike Tarrani HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on April 16, 2012

The music on this album is spectacular and is an ample reason to purchase it if you love jazz from the 1950s.

I cannot say the same for Jack Kerouac's poetry on nearly every other track. At the time - the 1950s - this was avant garde (if not daring) poetry. It does not stand the test of time to me, sadly, and sounds self indulgent or even naive today, even to someone like myself who was born in the late 1940s. Of course if you are a fan then those tracks are a bonus and double the value of this album.

There are a few tracks that are either poetic or that captures the spirit of the beat generation, including Charles Mingus' Scenes in the City and Al Jazbo Collins' Three Little Pigs (A Grimm Fairy Tale For Hip Kids), both of which are as fresh to my ears today as they were back in the day.

One real treat on this album is the Slim Gaillard tracks, and especially Slim's Jam, which features Charlie Parker! And, with luminaries such as Monk, Dizzy, Bird and Bud Powell gracing this album (not to mention Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray and a wealth of others) the music is unquestionably of the highest caliber.

I still gave this album five stars despite the distractions of what I considered to be self-indulgent poetry. I deleted that stuff from the playlist I made and was left with some of the best music of the Beat era.

This reminds me of my old "Beat Generation" 3 cd box set that Rhino put out ages ago. There are some amusing spoken word pieces, the obligatory bop-jazz numbers and the whole lot blends together quite nicely. Sadly missing is Lord Buckley but you should have a cd of his monologues anyway. Quality is as good as you'd expect from needle-drops. There are no man-on-the-street interviews that were on the Rhino set but I don't miss those. I'd rather listen to Bird anyway. Well-worth a listen if you are into the 1950s hipster scene.

This is a very cool set of CD's. Get hip to these cats because they are beat, man, beat! Nice jazz and cool monologues. Maybe it's because I am an old man but I like this set! Brings back memories!
