Colonial Baked Apples with Cherries

Easy is the operative word here. This dessert is easy to make-and even easier to eat. Try these cherry- and nut-filled baked apples for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. Cherries are low on the glycemic index and contain an abundance of antioxidants, such as vitamin C. Apples are also high in vitamin C, which stabilizes blood sugar levels and minimizes sugar cravings.

Ingredients:

—2 tablespoons (30 ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice

—1/3 cup (60 g) dried cherries

—3 tablespoons (25 g) chopped walnuts

—1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

—2 tablespoons (30 ml) honey or maple syrup

—6 apples, cored

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C, or gas mark 4). Spray a baking sheet with nonstick vegetable spray. In a bowl, mix together the lemon juice, cherries, walnuts, lemon zest, and honey or maple syrup. Place the cored apples on the baking sheet. Fill each apple with the cherry-nut mixture. Bake until the apples are soft, about 30 to 40 minutes.

I'm types 2 an 3, and I just LOVE these recipes. I'm a very picky eater (what I call a "kids menu" eater!), so I was worried that I wouldn't like many of the recipes, but there are many in here that I really enjoy. I recommend this for anyone who's trying to cut sugar out of your diet, even if you haven't read the Beat Sugar Addiction Now book (though it does help to read the book so you know which type of sugar addict you are and can choose recipes accordingly).

I often avoid recipe books that contain complicated recipes. My busy schedule doesn't afford me the time to shop specialty grocers locating fancy ingredients - they're just too much trouble! Then I discovered the new "Beat Sugar Addiction Now! Cookbook". This is the book for me, with easy to follow recipes using ingredients I can actually find at my local grocery store. No hunting for exotic spices or vegetables I've never heard of!

Chapter 1 titled "Sugar Free 101" is a great way to review the basics for breaking sugar addiction (I didn't know NutraSweet had so many side effects!) Next is an easy to interpret rating system that allows you to identify which sugar addiction profile you qualify for.

The table of contents directs you to your specific profile type with an organized format of breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes. Even desserts! Each recipe indicates the blood sugar balance rating from None (no useful quantity) to High (optimal level). The chapters allow you to choose recipes that appeal vs. their blood sugar balance rating. My favorite recipes are the "Speedy Stir Fry" followed by the tasty "Cherry Yogurt Freeze" for a cool summer dessert :)

I have struggled with Candida for a very long time, tried and failed many diet regimes. I've finally found a cookbook that not only has great recipes but is informative about my specific sugar addiction problem, and addresses many others. It is educational, informative, and easy to navigate and understand. The categories are well organized, with quick health tips throughout. There are also many useful references at the end.

I highly recommend the "Beat Sugar Addiction Now! Cookbook" to anyone on a quest to lower their sugar intake while losing weight and improving their overall health - without sacrificing satisfaction at mealtime!

This book has wonderful and usable recipes to make food appetizing and decilious without sugar. I wasn't sure if I wanted one more cookbook but this one is practical for people watching their nutrition and glycemic index.

Don't eat another thing before you read this book. If you feel 'not quite up to par', lethargic, lacking energy, tired all the time, unable to sleep or if you suffer from ME or CFS, this is especially important. Even if you feel fit at the moment, but have a sweet tooth, read it. I have suffered for years with ME or CFS as they prefer to call it now - since a bout of flu in 1992. The only time I felt I had any energy was when I gave up sugar but my doctor said sugar was not the cause, so I went back to eating it. My whole body aches, symptoms fluctuate and vary but I am convinced sugar is my problem. I have terrible digestive problems and more. I even had a dietician (a student) at the hospital tell me I could eat as much sugar as I liked because I was not diabetic! I did not follow his advice. Reading this book confirms my worst fears and there is only one way to find out if it's true and that's to give the stuff up. I am using this book to help me. Although I must say as a vegetarian, I didn't find most of the recipes suitable for me, and many don't sound that appetizing to me but if this book can help bring back my health - I'm going to give it 100%. The book talks about balancing blood sugar, dietary changes and the foods your body needs. You may be in denial, but this book makes sound sense. It classifies sugar 'addicts' into four types (some would argue that sugar is not an addictive substance) I am actually Type 1 and 2. It then offers nutritious, balanced recipes to ensure your body gets the fuel it needs. Find your energy and restore your body to a healthy weight. So I was really excited when I started looking at the recipes but so far the first two I have made (coconut spice cookies and coconut muffins) have been a total disaster. First of all the recipe calls for 2 cups of coconut flour which is A LOT of coconut flour. Most recipes call for 1/4 or 1/2 cup. Since the muffins didnt work (the mix was completely dry) I tried the cookies with 1/2 cup instead of 2 cups. The mix was still dry. The only liquid in the recipe was syrup and coconut oil which is not really a liquid. I am going to try melting the coconut oil next time and see if that helps. I honestly dont know what Im doing wrong. Tonight im trying my first non dessert recipe so I will report back how that goes.

Update: I removed another star because I tried two more recipes and they were both bad. My husband will eat everything I cook and never complains. Tonight he asked me what cookbook I have been cooking from lately and recommended I dont use it anymore. I tried to make a "meat"loaf with veggies and lentils but the density was wrong and it became a pilaf. Today I made a gingered halibut and the sauce had no flavor.

Honestly, I am really disappointed because the recipes all look great. I can make most recipes work but I dont think the writers know what they're doing. Im going to throw this book away,
