I'm struggling with the way I want to approach this review. You f there was ever a time I felt completely middle of the road this is it. While I can appreciate the complexity of the subject matter I struggle with the predicability. This novel was well written but not in way to make me feel as if I couldn't put it down. The subtle or not so subtle clues sprinkled throughout the writing created intrigue but gave away too much simultaneously. The twist was not usual but at the same time not a surprise.

There's nothing like an author's ability to captivate a reader by providing imagery that's tantalizing to the senses! This book has done it for me! From the powerful beginning to the phenomenal end, Brian pulls you into the 3 worlds of domestic violence (agressor, victim, and others affected) with character conversation and description that makes you live vicariously through them all! If you have not had the pleasureable experience of reading the work of Brian W. Smith, I encourage you to do so. I have read other books by this author (Mama's Lies, Daddy's Pain, Nina's Got A Secret, The Swap Game, etc.) and I have not been disappointed. You won't be either! Good job, Brian! Keep doing what you're doing to give us the other side of the story! ;)

This book started with a Bang! I was drawn in to the story right from the beginning. It had the potential to be a captivating novel because it covered some interesting topics that are relevant to current events. It wasn't bad just not as good as it could have been... I'd look for more work from this author because he did get my attention.

This book was a quick and interesting read. It held my attention and the twist in the end was unexpected. As others have commented, considering the subject matter, this book had the potential to be great but fell short when topic was not expounded upon.

Immediately I was xcited about this book; it opens with such action that u have no choice but 2 have ur curiosity peeked. The story of Todd & Kim, estranged siblings who shared n a very traumatizing experience as adolescents was rather unique. I thought the story was 2 tempo, an easy read & a page turner, but it didn't have me anxious 2 finish 2 hurry & find out the big reveal. I found myself hung up on one of the clues throughout the book, but I never wudda guessed all the details... so job well done n that area! I njoyd all of the characters & the author's ability 2 not drag the story out any longer than need b.

This book was not enjoyable to me. When u look at the title that's what ur looking for but I didn't get that until 80% of the book. The storyline dragged on and was slow. U want to keep the reader interested and this book didn't do that for me. Maybe I'll find it in another one of the authors books but not this one.

As a featured Author of 2016's NBCC, I selected "Beater" as my book club's selection of the month but unfortunately it was just an ok read for me.

Coming out the gates with an intensely captivating opening, "Beater" had potential to be a 5 star read. However, it strings you along to a predictably twisted ending that reads much like a straight to DVD B-List movie. Although the intrigue of male abuse drew me in, it lacked edge but was full of mystery, light hearted humor and short chapters that made for an easy read.

This read was just ok. I felt it was slow and I would have like to have a lot more action! For the book to be about such a serious subject it really didn't come to a head and get down to it until the very end! I wish there could have been more detail/action..
