The Finnish boys' sophomore effort is christened with samples about "cutting" and wicky-wicky, Blaxploitation-style guitars. Another downtempo hip-hop production to throw into the pile? Nope. Beatitude goes all over the map: surf guitar, wah-wah guitar, acoustic guitar, all coming together to make it, well, pretty guitar-heavy compared to their debut, Super Sound. Pepe Deluxe collaborates with nearly 40 other musicians here, flipping soul samples over a nice Bollywood-esqe creation, tinged with some acidy synth ("Girl"). Later they reach into commercial territory on "Ask for a Kiss," which sounds readymade for a Gap commercial. Styles pile alongside each other, and Beatitude kind of comes off as a hodgepodge. But despite the absence of a conceptual framework, the unfocused sprawl is part of the appeal. It's not Endtroducing or Deadringer, but some kind of martini-swilling, music-buff relative of those - one that wants to make you dance and then have sex with you. No problem then.

Supersound was great, and Beatitude keeps pace. One of the most impressive aspects of Pepe Deluxe's music is that they draw from, and meld themselves into such a wide variety of musical styles. Their songs range from dance-floor pieces that will keep your party moving all night long, to mellow songs that make you want to lean back and say "ahhhhh," and everything in between.
While Supersound explored the ranges between blues, beatnik, modern dance beat, and a host of other western styles, Beatitude delves into a cross-cultural mix between east and west, north and south.
Pepe Deluxe builds each song skillfully, pulling found pieces from all over the world and crafting them into beautiful music. They are staking their claim as one of the most creative groups around today.
Mostly sample-driven slow groove stuff......funky and experimental sounding with a good beat. I love how they start with a foundation of drum and bass and then add all sorts of interesting things on top, including some fantastic vocals. I'm not sure if the vocals are samples or recorded specifically for the album, but they fit really well. The album mixes and matches genres to great effect. Go ahead and try it. It might just make your day..:-)
