I own other noise-cancelling headphones that work pretty well. They don't squeeze your head. They're not stylish, and the main drawback with them is they use a AAA battery and don't auto-shutoff. So if (and when) you forget to turn off the noise-cancelling switch, the next time you go to use them, the battery is dead, which pretty much nullifies their noise-cancelling abilities. They're also old enough to NOT have a switch for answering the phone, if you're plugged into your portable phone.
So - these DON'T have a battery and achieve noise-cancelling the old-fashioned way - with a tight fit and deeply cushioned earpieces. They are tight, and could use a user-adjustable piece on the TOP of the headphone to control the width of the headphones. I don't know why they didn't do this - it might solve a lot of people's fit problems easily.
The sound from the headphones is really very good - Bass galore and pretty nice midrange and highs. It has a built-in button on the cord for answering your phone (which my other battery-operated ones don't have).
They do squeeze my head pretty hard. When I went to try and bend them outwards a bit to ease the pressure, I thought I would break them if I pushed any harder on the top - don't do this! You might break the plastic. I WAS able to bend the metal pieces that are just above the earphones on each side just a little bit and that eased the pressure up to make a better, less painful fit. But be careful doing this too. They are tough to keep on for a long time, but for regular listening (like for an album/CD-length amount of time) it's not a problem for me. Take a 5 minute break and you can get right back to it.
Bottom line is these sound great, the headphones just need a bit more adjustment features and it would be perfect. The sound is as good as the big BOSE "earmuffs" (which are super-comfortable and sound great but are bulky and make you look like you're heading for the Antarctic).
While I would NOT buy another pair of this model, I would definitely consider buying the next generation of these if they add a bit more adjust-a-bility to them, because they DO sound that good and aren't that bulky, and do look pretty darn cool.
I only had Apple earbuds before I received the Beats Solo HD as a present. The difference was night and day, of course. I was hearing things I had never heard before. The sound was nice and clear. I know a couple of people have said the sound has been muddy due to the bass, and it is to a slight degree when compared to other headphones (I also have the Audio Technica M50s). However, I don't think the bass from the Beats makes the music that muddy or is too overpowering. The Beats have provided a nice sound for all genres I listen to, which can be very random.
In comparison to more audiophile-approved headphones such as the Audio Technica M50s, the Beats are fun. The Audio Technica headphones I have definitely provide better mid-range, the bass is nice and low, and the music sounds very clear (i.e. I can decipher different instruments in the background, etc). However, sometimes I just love listening to my Beats because they provide good audio quality and yet have a little extra bass to make the music really bump. I'm not using them for any professional purpose, nor am I expecting absolute clarity with them. I use them mostly when walking around campus, in the library, or when I'm studying at a coffee shop, which can have a loud environment. For that, they are great headphones, and the isolation is surprisingly good. I can barely hear a thing around me when I have them on, even when the music is low. One problem I do notice though is that the headphones will leak if the volume is turned up too high. I usually have my iPod set at about 50% or less, and they don't leak at that volume, but around 75% or more, people around me can start to hear the music.
In all, I think they are great headphones -- definitely several steps up from my Apple earbuds. I love listening to them, and they are comfortable to wear for an extended period of time. No problems with anything breaking, and the glossy finish doesn't seem to be an issue for me even though I know some people said it was a finger print magnet. Also, the control talk is great. Every time I used my Apple earbuds for talking on the phone, people had trouble hearing me, but with the Beats, they hear me loud and clear (again, if you have the volume up too loud though, other people can hear your entire conversation). There are always going to be better quality headphones out there, but for me, I think the Beats provide good audio quality, they're very stylish, and they have gotten me interested in learning more about other headphones, audio equipment, and sound quality.
