I also had problems with the on ear headphone. They just felt too heavy and clumsy for me.
These went directly to a teenager as a hand-me-down. It was like lightning.
The material they're made of is cheap plastic. Mine actually snapped in half when my friend tried to put them on. Granted he's got a big head but my point is, it doesn't take much for the fragile materials.
The mic attached to the headphones is virtually useless. I usually ended up having to hold it right up to my mouth for people on the other end to understand me.
I bought these headphone because they were becoming really popular and I thought they looked really cool, but for the price tag attached to it, they really don't live up to standards. Take your $150, buy a pair of skull candies and a new PS4 game. You'll thank me later.
I only had Apple earbuds before I received the Beats Solo HD as a present. The difference was night and day, of course. I was hearing things I had never heard before. The sound was nice and clear. I know a couple of people have said the sound has been muddy due to the bass, and it is to a slight degree when compared to other headphones (I also have the Audio Technica M50s). However, I don't think the bass from the Beats makes the music that muddy or is too overpowering. The Beats have provided a nice sound for all genres I listen to, which can be very random.
In comparison to more audiophile-approved headphones such as the Audio Technica M50s, the Beats are fun. The Audio Technica headphones I have definitely provide better mid-range, the bass is nice and low, and the music sounds very clear (i.e. I can decipher different instruments in the background, etc). However, sometimes I just love listening to my Beats because they provide good audio quality and yet have a little extra bass to make the music really bump. I'm not using them for any professional purpose, nor am I expecting absolute clarity with them. I use them mostly when walking around campus, in the library, or when I'm studying at a coffee shop, which can have a loud environment. For that, they are great headphones, and the isolation is surprisingly good. I can barely hear a thing around me when I have them on, even when the music is low. One problem I do notice though is that the headphones will leak if the volume is turned up too high. I usually have my iPod set at about 50% or less, and they don't leak at that volume, but around 75% or more, people around me can start to hear the music.
In all, I think they are great headphones -- definitely several steps up from my Apple earbuds. I love listening to them, and they are comfortable to wear for an extended period of time. No problems with anything breaking, and the glossy finish doesn't seem to be an issue for me even though I know some people said it was a finger print magnet. Also, the control talk is great. Every time I used my Apple earbuds for talking on the phone, people had trouble hearing me, but with the Beats, they hear me loud and clear (again, if you have the volume up too loud though, other people can hear your entire conversation). There are always going to be better quality headphones out there, but for me, I think the Beats provide good audio quality, they're very stylish, and they have gotten me interested in learning more about other headphones, audio equipment, and sound quality.
