Purchase options and add-ons
There were no surprises in Gatlin County. At least, that's what I thought. Turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong.
Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin as a place where nothing ever changed. Then mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes revealed a secret world of curses and Supernaturals with terrifying abilities. Lena showed him a Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen. Sometimes life-ending.
And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

I love everything about this book from the characters to the plot down to the writing style.. The authors, Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, are incredible writers, period. The webwork of planning they have put in to these novels is astounding. Rather than just telling a story, they *show* the reader with their intricate details, vivid imaginations, strong characters, right down to their beautiful use of words.
The characters are the most important piece of this story as everything else revolves around them. No matter how minor a role a character plays, they are portrayed in such a way that you can't help but feel connected to them. Uncle Macon fulfills his reputation as a mysterious recluse with countless secrets (maybe not the secrets everyone originally thought, but he's always hiding something, nonetheless). Amma, one of my favorite characters, is resilient and, quite frankly, a little scary, but is always there for Ethan, despite her scolding and The Look. Link, Ethan's best friend, is so lovable that you never want him to go away, inflated ego and all. And yes, even Ridley, with her lollipop sucking evilness grows to become a character we can't wait to learn more about. You can differentiate each character by their distinct personalities (probably one of my favorite aspects - nothing irks me more than characters who are all the same but given different names), and they each grow as individuals in different ways, adding such unbelievable flavor to the main story.
Ahh, but what about the two main characters, Lena and Ethan? There is nothing magical or supernaturally exceptional about Ethan - he's just a regular human, `all-American' guy.. His only power is his will - his determination to save Lena despite the consequences. He's a great guy, but he's not perfect and makes mistakes like the rest of us, making him a character we can believe and sympathize with. Lena is another story altogether. She's basically a big ball of confusion and wrought emotions in this novel as she tries to figure out who she is - "Look at me Ethan. Am I Dark or am I Light?". Ethan knows who and what she is, and this is another element of his power as he does everything short of giving his life for her to make her see what he sees. Lena makes sacrifices for him as well, as you will see, but they come in a different form - one Ethan refuses to accept.
The plot is so complex that I'm not even sure what to say about it other than it just completely involves you. There is a reason for every single thing that happens - no word, sentence, or paragraph is a waste of space - everything is relevant and connected in some way.
Because of the intricacy of the plot, there are so many emotions involved, many of which are difficult to deal with for both the characters and the readers, but that's what makes this novel so *beautiful*. As I've said, the title fits the contents perfectly.
The writing style of this novel is almost poetic. The way the authors use words, well, there's nothing simple about it. It grabs your attention and gets your mind working - needless to say, I absolutely adore it. I'll just give you a sample, and you can see what I mean for yourself:
"There was no one color that could paint Lena Duchannes. She was a red sweater and a blue sky, a gray wind and a silver sparrow, a black curl escaping from behind her ear."
You have to read the whole book to know what a lot of that means, but once you do, you'll see the beauty I've been raving about.
Maybe I'm a little biased, which many say shouldn't be included in a review (something I don't wholeheartedly agree with myself), but if you love a book, why not say so? **I love this book**
Happy Reading Everyone :)
Lena has changed. As someone who lost his own mother, Ethan understands what that loss can do, but she won't open up to him at all. With Macon gone, she is floundering. As a Caster, she was supposed to choose light or dark with her sixteenth birthday, but that didn't happen. Lena knows her Claiming is coming up soon, but she is terrified by making the choice, because it means if she chooses Light, all the dark Casters in her family will die, and vice versa. The choice is an impossible one, and Lena is crumbling under the pressure. Who she chooses to help her through it are her Dark caster cousin Ridley (a siren) and someone named John Breed who is dangerous, but Ethan can't figure out what exactly he is- Caster, Incubus, etc.
As Lena pulls farther and farther away, Ethan tried harder and harder to find a way to bring her back. Armed with his aunts' stalker cat, Lucille Ball, his best friend, goofy Link, and the new Keeper-in-training, Liv, they enter the Caster world to help Lena. They aren't ready for the dangers that lurk there, though, and are saved by Amma, (Ethan's Caribbean housekeeper who is more warden and mother than housekeeper) and Lena's family, Dark and Light on more than one occasion. When it becomes clear Ethan's mother was tied closer to Macon than any of them had suspected, she starts speaking to him through visions. She helps lead Ethan to the redemption both he and Lena need. But will he get there in time to save the girl he loves even though he can never truly be with her? Is there more to Ethan and his destiny than anyone could have expected?
This was an excellent follow-up to the first book. My initial trouble was how long of a gap it was for me between the two books. I had trouble remembering what had happened already, and the author's don't really catch you up. While that is fine if you are reading the books back to back, it would be difficult for anyone waiting for the obligatory year before the next is published. Some information is slowly revealed, but it was too scattered and too vague to truly help. The best solution would have been for me to reread the first book, but with an ever present stack of books staring at me, I couldn't bring myself to do it.
I also struggled with Lena's character in this book. She was always conflicted, and Ethan and her together made a doomed, but perfect couple, but I had trouble with how quickly she abandoned him and started using her powers for mischief without thought to the consequences. Ethan had lost his mother, and he was always supportive of Lena. I understood the added pressure she felt, but it was tough to read this book and not dislike her by the end. The bonus, however, was the supporting characters like Ethan's Great Aunts, Amma, and Link. They really broke out in this story and made it not only enjoyable, but fun even! As Amma threatens Link and Ethan, smacks Ethan, and keeps Lena in control, you can't help but adore her. Link is so ridiculous he makes the story lively and will have you giggling. And the Aunts simply speak for themselves! I loved these characters, and truthfully, they made a very long book fly for me.
This is a very large book, about 500 pages, similar to the first book. That means, while it is an interesting and fun story, I probably wouldn't suggest it for anyone but a strong reader with a real interest in the supernatural. Otherwise, you might find a student really bogged down by the sheer length of it. The language and content is very mild, with nothing that would make it inappropriate for a student middle school and up. But again, the length would stop me from giving this to many kids. As an adult, though, I really love this story! It might be a good series to give to an adult you know to break them into the YA genre!

Where other novels exercise the obligatory separation of our couple by keeping them away from each other completely, Ethan and Lena still got a kind of psychical connection and are only physically separated. So the importance of Ethan and Lena's psychical bond is once again accentuated. I am looking forward to learn more about their special connection in the next two books.
As in Beautiful Creatures, the story is told from Ethan Wate's point of view whose character is as adorable and charming as in the first Caster Chronicles novel. There are very few male narrators in YA fantasy novels, because female authors often tend to apply female narrators I think.
Although Lena's development and her decisions around becoming a light or dark Caster form the centre of the Caster Chronicles series, the story is told from Ethan's point of view. In my opinion this choice of perspective is the best the authors could have applied, because experiencing Lena through the eyes of Ethan, and so someone who loves her and cares about her fate, establishes a very intense connection with her although she isn't our narrator and supports the mysterious atmosphere of the whole story.
Interesting about Beautiful Darkness is, that we see the happenings through Ethan's eyes, but are at the same time accomplice with Lena. Keeping a secret from Ethan almost broke my heart. In Beautiful Creatures there was a particular short chapter, told from Lena's point of view and I haven't read a novel before in which a single chapter of the first novel has such an enormous impact on its sequel.
The conflict grows slowly but steadily and the secrets kept accumulate into an adventurous race for life or death. Various plot strands build a delicately branched web of an unforeseeable suspense you can't but get caught in. In the end there seem to be many secrets unsolved and still a gigantic potential left.
Not only main characters show major changes, secondary characters, too.
Characters being cold and resistant before finally show feelings, evil and cruel characters become even crueller. Also many new characters are introduced. Some are new allies, friendly and light, others are even darker than the already established Beautiful Creatures villains.
A satisfying sequel to Beautiful Creatures, full of all-consuming emotions, inevitable decisions and unforeseeable outcomings. Do you already feel the beautiful darkness creeping into your heart?
THE VERDICT
Again, a beautifully written novel by the talented casters Garcia and Stohl. They once again proof their talent to apply witty elements and develop an extensive storyline by creating an universe of a novel which is as huge and infinite as the Caster sky itself. And as many constellations there are to spot, there are just as many opportunities for exciting and new story elements, special abilities and characters.
New fantasy elements meet solid writing style- The Caster world fills the gap between werewolves and vampires, faeries and magicians and leaves an urgent need for more.
