A whirlwind romance ensues between Lucas Bradley and Morgan Carter when the two drunkenly stumble into each other in a pub bathroom. A beautiful game between them evolves, a game of push and pull and unpredictability, a game of messy emotions and bad reputations, a game of distrust and lust and obstacles threatening them at every turn.
This fast paced romance between a British footballer and an American living in the UK on a work visa is one you'll devour in one sitting. Lucas is every athlete you expect to find in an angsty sports romance. He's famous and womanizing, carefree, noncommittal, drunk and disorderly, regularly providing prime juice for tabloid fodder. Morgan is in England just looking for an adventure, looking to travel and step out on her own across the pond. She knows nothing of British football or the athletes gracing the pitch. Her naivete is a perfectly refreshing change from all the 'goal chasing slags' Lucas is used to.
I adored the struggles in this romance as much as I enjoyed the snarky banter, the sensual chemistry, the lush romance. Lucas has a maddening history of sleeping around and the women who throw themselves at him at every turn are enough to drive the reader crazy with fury. I like a book to infuriate me and this one certainly did. This is your quintessential sports romance in almost every way, but with the unique British spin on every page, this American reader was carried across the pond to fall in love right along with these characters.
The Beautiful Game was over all too soon. I might go so far as to say it was a bit rushed at the end. But the more I think back on it, the more intoxicating and delicious I think the book was as a whole. I'm secretly hoping to see more of Morgan and Lucas down the road. I was just as enamored with the rest of Lucas' teammates as I was with Lucas himself and with such possibilities presenting themselves in this book for so many side characters, I'm hopeful we haven't seen the last of these characters.
This book is as much a love story as it is a good look at what it's like for an American to start a new life in England. I found myself learning right along with Morgan charming British vernacular, that she found as perplexing as her feelings for the gorgeous local football star. It was fun to watch her get defiant at the whys of the British, when she was actually becoming more comfortable than she thought in her adopted country.
For Lucas, he is desperate for change and never thought it would come in the form of a mouthy American girl who didn't know the first thing about his passion that is football. But they somehow bring out both the best and worst in each other and although at times I wanted to knock some sense into Lucas for his bad decisions, his deep-seeded pain at being abandoned by his father explained his resistance to get close to any woman.
I loved that Morgan held her own and managed to navigate through some tough times at being so out of her element, far from her small Virginia town and being dumbstruck at the charm that Lucas Bradley bestowed upon her. She managed to bring that womanizer to his knees and I wanted to high five her more than once!
I'm happy the ends that need to be tied up with respect to our couple will be continued in the next book in the series, featuring the surprise romance between Lucas's pal, Alan and his sister Anna. This is a great group of characters and I look forward to more of their adventures.
A solid 4 stars!!
This book hit a lot of high notes for me. It not only had passion and chemistry, but it also had the backdrop of a sport I adore, soccer/football, and I was able to really connect with Morgan and Lucas. I even teared up a time or too because of the emotions they were feeling, which were really easy to tap into. And while there were some tears, there were some laughs too.
So if you're into sports romances like me, looking for something with strong character, and a great story, definitely check this book out!
