Editorial Reviews

Review

“An alluring story of New York nightlife and its seedy players.”
—Cat Marnell, VICE columnist

“Equal parts Patti Smith’s Just Kids and The Diary of Anaïs Nin, Beautiful Garbage is a voyeuristic panorama of the vice and vanity of the downtown art scene in the 1980s.”
—Ivy Pochoda, author of The Art of Disappearing and Visitation Street

Beautiful Garbage offers up one woman’s tour of duty of a New York City consumed by art, sex, and ambition. By turns passionate, cruel, shocking, and engrossing, this is a novel steeped in the lure of glamour and transformation the Big Apple’s always had to offer.”
—Rachel Kramer Bussel, editor of Women in Lust and Fast Girls

“Beautiful, yes. Garbage, no. Just a captivating story of art, women, friendship, drugs, and self-destruction set against the glittery backdrop of a vanished Manhattan.”
—Elisa Albert, author of The Book of Dahlia

Beautiful Garbage combines the page-turning ease of a beach read with a polished and ambitious literary tone. As challenging and unconventional as its heroine, Jodi Plum, the book falls into a heritage that includes Plath and Edie Sedgwick, and yet is freshly and con dently dependent on neither.”
—Ruth Fowler, author of Girl, Undressed

“We have all heard the phrase ‘one man's garbage is another's treasure.’ Beautiful Garbage happens to be everyone’s treasure. To read this book is to listen to that gritty voice in your own head that keeps repeating, DO IT.”
—Jules Kim, Creator and Owner of Bijules Jewelry

Had the description of the book been more accurate, I would have rated it higher. This book did little to reflect the feel of New York during those days, there was no atmosphere, no accurate subtext for it to be compared to "Just Kids" or really have anything in common specifically with that era. The juxtaposition of past/present might have worked better had the author taken more time to develop it and less focus on the protagonist's day-to-day life apologizing for her choices. Di Donato is a very good writer and some of the scenes she wrote were chilling and very real, but they did not braid well or really give a cohesive picture of the times. I had originally purchased it for a young friend who is an artist, will give it to him and see what he thinks. I will amend this if he offers substantive argument.

Beautiful Garbage is an elegant and vividly crafted exploration of the 1980s art scene and of one woman's personal evolution as she makes her way through it. It's a sexy novel that actually makes you think; what exactly is the connection between sex, creativity, and consumerism?

I found this book to be both entertaining and well-written. With the glamorous 1980's as a backdrop, we follow the main character Jodi's journey as she encounters drugs, sex and NYC's art scene. A great read, I would definitely recommend.

Ms.DiDonato is a blooming writer and she has given us Jodi, who is complex, captivating, funny, and all out there!! Her seductive style both engages and informs the reader of so many things: the inside story of a curious, sexual young woman with brave female agency (that's new and different); a very well written and at times unsettling story (that's always welcome); a view of the underbelly of the 80's new york city art and drug scene from Jodi's feminist Standpoint Position (that's new ground). The Standpoint Position of post-modernist feminist theory forces us to re-think what might be important instead of thinking that we already know. Ms. DiDonato is on to something here. Read it and rethink what might be important.........while enjoying every word.

Miss DiDonato's prose is eloquent, exotic and effortless. This is a great read and a truly artful coming of age story. Bravo for a premiere novel. Delicate, ethereal and raw at points. The writing will draw you in brilliantly. It's superb to see such eclectic and classic talent.

REVIEW

This book is Ms. Di Donato's debut novel. The setting for the book is New York art scene, 1980's. We read of Jodi Plum and her journey throuhg sex, drugs and the art scene. She has a lot of pain from her confusion about sexuality at an early age. She expresses herself through her art. That may save her. BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE is about Jodi's personnal evolution as she makes her way with her art. The book draws you in. You begin to care about Jodi. Her life is complicated and you want to make it better. You can tell by the way the book is so well written that a lot of research and study went into the writing. I think I went through so many feelings as I read this amazing book. Sometimes it was honest, disturbing, interesting, dark, edge of the seat and a real page turner. I would recommend this book to anybody that might be looking for something better in their life. It's Jodi's journey to the dark side of the art world, sex, need, morality, complications and so much more. Will Jodi find herself, her true self?

I would give this book 5 STARS.

I was given a complimentary copy of BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE from the author, Jill Di Donato for my honest review.

Thank you Ms. Di Donato for this informative and interesting story. I look forward to your next book.

I enjoyed "Beautiful Garbage" so much that I read it in two days. I even stayed up late late because I felt it'd be a disservice to leave it 30 pages short of finished. Despite being a child herself during that time, it's as though Di Donato lived through Jodi's life in a New York that doesn't exist anymore. Her passion and views are evident and her writing is so poetic. Excellent research and personal experience add to the story's power. A brilliant, raw debut album.

Although this is Miss Di Donato's debut novel, it does not show forth in her artistic writing style and rich complexity which each and every page. This book left me hooked after the first chapter. Each chapter of her novel leaves you anxious to continue to the next. The setting, location, and storyline are a perfect read for me. I would recommend this book to anyone who is exploring their passion with art and the cut throat society we live in. Miss Di Donato was indeed me english professor and I wish she would have forced us to read her novel in class. Everyone at the Fashion Institute of Technology should read this story full of pain, elegance, and artistic passion. So happy I heard about this book. Can't wait to lend out my book to friends so they can explore the life of Jodi Plum and truly understand the life of a artist.
