The story is about a young girl who lives with a sexually abusive step-father. He has been molesting her with the knowledge of her battered mother and now threatens to rape her on her eighteenth birthday. He keeps, as most abusers do, a tight rein on Sara. He knows where she is most of the time and controls her through fear and intimidation. Moving into a new town, Sara meets Rick in school. As their relationship develops, Sara learns to trust others and reach out for help. The climax is both fast-paced and heart-rending. I found the book an easy read, and yet profoundly disturbing.
The subject matter of childhood sexual abuse is important and eye-opening. There are so many children who find themselves in similar circumstances who would benefit from this novel. I believe this work would help them see that they are not alone. It might encourage them to reach out for help and step beyond the fear that the abuser uses to control them. It is also an important work for those who do not have abuse in their background. They might learn to understand the psychology of the abused and how to help them. All in all, this is an important insight and a wonderfully written novel. I highly recommend reading it and I am looking forward to future works by this talented author!
