Beautiful Kate apparently was an idea in director Rachel Ward's mind for some time before she could get this, her first feature film, off the ground. Her husband, Bryan Brown, was cast as the father in the film, which I'm sure helped attract funding.

The film needs to be seen without spoilers, so I'll just comment on my overall assessment of the film. It is set in South Australia, which apparently is dry and desolate (though some of that may be due to a seven-year drought). Father Bruce Kendall is a tough taskmaster who has charge of four children; Ned, who in the film returns after a 20-year absence to see his father as he is dying, Sally, who has remained behind on the farm, and works with disadvantaged youth, Cliff, who is perhaps an under-achiever, and the titular Beautiful Kate.

Bruce has suffered a number of losses, his wife, and two of his children. After all of these years, he still doesn't understand what happened to cause the death of the two. There's the official story, but he suspects more. Will he learn the full story before he dies?

We see the dysfunction of the family after Ned arrives with his trampy girlfriend, Toni. Toni is a waitress, but claims to be an actress, one who doesn't need clothes, according to Ned. The bickering starts right up as if the past 20 years hadn't happened. The children never call Bruce 'Dad'; he's always just Bruce.

Slowly, the secrets unravel, though a combination of present day footage and flashbacks. Both are arranged to slowly let the audience in on what has transpired so many years ago that left a family torn apart.

Recommended. This film is another worthy effort by the Australian film industry. The landscape, harsh, dry and rugged as it is, gives the film some of its power. Living in a remote area may have propelled the events that otherwise would not have happened.

If you're an incest survivor be aware that this movie touches intimately on those issues. The performances are first-rate and Rachel Ward's direction really captures the isolation of the area and why the incident in the movie might (and probably in real life does) occur. It's not a movie I'd come back to again, however, I feel it's worth at least a one-time viewing.

Sensitive subject. I won't elaborate on what has already been said. The theme is Brother/Sister Incest, and it may shock you, or excite you, but either way, the acting is quite good. Don't expect your wife or girlfriend or to appreciate the Theme. Most will be grossed out. But, if you are into controversial themed movies, this one is on the list.

This is a well-acted movie with an interesting plot. It is certainly bizarre, and not for the faint of heart, as it deals with a very strange, underground topic. The film is definitely worth a watch, but I don't know that I would take the plunge and buy it.

I watched this movie today on Foxtel pay TV not knowing what to expect.
Family secrets are slowly revealed as the movie is unravelled.
Set in the Flinders ranges of South Australia, the scenery was great as was the soundtrack.Brian Brown gives an awesome display as usual & the other actors were also very good.

This is a beautiful movie. Rachel Ward both wrote the script and directed the movie.
A guy is asked to return to the family home by his sister, to say goodbye to his father who is dying. The family home is in a very remote and isolated area in outback Australia. While he is back at home, He starts having memories of his twin sister and himself when they were children. These memories awaken long-buried secrets from the family's past. The subject matter is handled in a manner that should not offend anybody.

I didn't totally know what to expect with this movie. As the story unfolded, I grew more uncomfortable with how the truth about what happened about 20 year earlier. I was only uncomfortably because it involved a very young and beautiful Kate. Sophie Lowe is amazing in this role. It is so sad what happened with the family.
I am a fan of Sophie so the nudity and interaction was hard to take but it was appropriate to the story. I guess these things really happen. I gave it a 5 for the drama that unfolds and the performance of the actors. Sadly, beautiful Kate.
