Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Legos have been a building block of childhoods around the world for decades (the Danish company, the Lego Group, was founded in 1949), but as graphic designer Doyle demonstrates in this impressive collection of 360 Lego models, they're far from child's play. The book showcases the work of 77 artists, who offer a wildly divergent results: from portraits of Freddie Mercury and the monsters from Alien to dissected frogs, space stations, and chromed-out hot rods. Though Doyle humbly waits until the middle of the book to showcase a few of his own sculptures, they are among the most striking. His stark black-and-white renderings of an elegant Victorian house damaged by an uprooted tree, as well as the book's cover (a massive futuristic city with countless spires) are nothing short of breathtaking. Brief bios of the creators accompany each entry, with the artists discussing what drew them to Lego bricks and their approach to design. One featured artist, Jordan Schwartz, may have achieved the ultimate goal: landing a job at Lego as a product designer due in part to his creations. Surprisingly, the book doesn't include specifications such as the dimensions of the pieces or the number of bricks used, nor are there images of works-in-progress. If readers can forgive that, they will be mesmerized by this astonishing collection. Full-color illus. (Nov.)

The rising popularity of LEGO as an art form is emphatically punctuated in Mike Doyle's book, Beautiful LEGO. Whereas the title seems to obviously declare what's inside, once you crack the pages and take a look, you'll wonder how Doyle kept his title so simple. This book is spectacular and should be more adequately titled, "267 pages of stunning, crisp, high resolution, full color photos of LEGO creations that will blow you away." Even the back cover and fold-over dust jacket are packed with artfully arranged high res. images, rather than busy words. This book is definitely destined to become the de rigueur of coffee table LEGO books [and may shove a few modern art books out of the way as well.]

Beautiful LEGO takes you on a jaw-dropping photo journey of the creations of around 70 different LEGO artists from around the world, including brief interviews with about a dozen of them. The LEGO creations depicted in the book range in size from Doyle's 200,000 piece, Contact-- the fantasy city featured on the cover-- down to 10 piece birds and snails with amazing character. Unlike other LEGO books where the photography and resolution are secondary, every image in this book appears to consist of a well-lit, clutter-free, high res. images destined for the Smithsonian. Many images are so clear you can see the airtight seams between even the smallest of bricks.

Among the strengths of this book is that Doyle does not linger on any particular LEGO artist, building style or motif for more than a few pages. The upside to this is that the reader gets a wide-ranging view of the amazing capabilities of the artist and their bricks, but the downside is that you may crave more.

"Beautiful LEGO" is different from any other LEGO-related book I've seen. It's not aimed particularly at kids, and it's not a how-to book. (There are no step-by-step instructions.) What it is is a handsome coffee table book showcasing amazing artistic creations using LEGOs. My son, an avid builder, was so inspired by reading this book that he started to work on some of his own creations right away.

One important aspect is that the book does not only contain pictures of awe-inspiring, massive works that take 100s of hours to put together. (It does have those, though - for example the cover image.) It also features small, innovative pieces that are not unlike what my son has created - with the additional eye and palette of an experienced artist. This is what is most clever about the book. While it features amazing artworks, many of them could be rebuilt by young readers - or even be the starting point for new creations. And the breadth is outstanding - from faithful historical replicas to way-out fantasy pieces. My son feels as if this book were created just for him.

So "Beautiful LEGO" is a coffee table book, and an inspirational guide for builders of any age. Beautiful!

This book is indeed beautiful! Unlike some of the other books on the Lego hobby, this one strays from a lot of the writing and focuses on just the beauty of Lego. The book is filled with full page images of some of the best Lego models around.

The book covers a wide variety of subjects and groups them accordingly. Sections like "Plastic Menagerie" focus on animal models while, "Mmmmm" is simply devoted to models of food.

This book is like a museum of Lego, focusing on many of the best creations out there. It takes you away from the idea of basement hobbyists and into the realm of professional art. This is a great coffee table art book and is sure to spark great conversations about Lego.

An amazing array of beautiful lego creations. This book is more that just a collection of legos, it is a work of artistic genius. You look through the images in this book and have to simply be amazed that what you are seeing are actually legos. I know I for one caught myself saying, "no way" numerous times, but as you look closer, you can see the legos that are definitely there. If you love LEGO as a company and either used them in the past or present, this is a book that you will want to have out at your own home to share with others, while giving you ideas for your next amazing creation!

Lego's have been a fascination of mine since I was a small boy. I was always amazed at how you could take these blocks and build just about anything. This is probably the foundation for why I was drawn to engineering. In this book, I was amazed at how far people could take lego art. It is truly wonderful how the human mind can design and build such wondrous things with just plastic blocks that can be linked together. I recommend this book to all lego fans. It has the ability to awe and inspire.

An amazing collection of creations from builders around the world that showcases the LEGO brick as an art medium. It has been on our coffee table for a few weeks and our friends and family will casually flip through it, only to go back and look at every creation from cover to cover. The layout is beautifully simple with minimal text that allows you to enjoy the creations as they are; would definitely classify this as an "art" book that could be enjoyed by people of all ages.
