Editorial Reviews

On the rough streets of Los Angeles, an unlikely romance is born when Maggie (Angela Sarafyan), a down-on-her-luck runaway, runs into a kindhearted illegal immigrant, David (Quinceañera’s Jesse Garcia), trying to make a new home away from El Salvador as a nightclub busboy. Together they begin an unforgettable journey involving a host of colorful characters including philosophical stripper (The Crow’s Bai Ling) and a sassy, unusual librarian (Goodfellas’ Debi Mazar). Also featuring Dana Delaney (Desperate Housewives) and Jonathan LaPaglia (Cold Case), this unforgettable indie gem is a story of lost souls finding their way in the city of dreams.

A tiny, slice-of-life character drama--"A Beautiful Life" doesn't break much new ground in its exploration of the hardships inherent on the mean streets of Los Angeles. But, its goals are moderate and its cast is appealing. The movie doesn't attempt to answer all of its character problems and, in fact, they end up in the same open ended position where they started (maybe worse)--but the film relies on the small advances and connections along the way to invest the viewer. I, for one, thought this was enough. With a view of the city that is not nightmarishly over-the-top, the film maintains a grittily real feeling that serves to ground the action. And the stark and simple performances further strengthen the film's impact. Even when the screenplay stretches into big confrontational moments which don't necessarily ring true, I never lost touch with the realness of the principle characters.

"A Beautiful Life" centers around an underage runaway (Angela Sarafyan) looking to escape the undisclosed trauma of her home situation. Shacked up in a strip club dumpster, she is rescued by a kindly dancer with dreams of stardom (Bai Ling) and an illegal immigrant janitor (Jesse Garcia). It's not easy, however, and all the characters feel the chill of the city nights. Ling goes through a series of bad boyfriend choices, Garcia battles immigration and those that would exploit his non-lawful status, and Sarafyan finds it difficult to make a living outside the system. Much of the film centers around the burgeoning relationship between Garcia and Sarafyan and it is easily the most successful and intriguing aspect of the film. There are some decidedly dark moments as Sarafyan's past abuse makes their tentative romance uncomfortable--and these scenes are exceedingly disturbing and well done.

I only bought it because Dana Delany is in it but you hardly see her. Very disappointing.

I lost track of how many times this low-budget indie used the same downtown LA scene-setter, with its view of the tallest building. It's a down-at-the-heels coming of age tale that focuses on a young girl who runs away because daddy abused her. She meets and falls for an illegal alien, and they live in an urban loft, of sorts, though how they pay for it, plus cell phones and food and beer, is left a bit hazy. The centerpiece is an attack by daddy who comes back to get his daughter, only to be driven off. There's no plot here, just a character study of homeless life in urban LA. It's forgettable, but okay as you watch it.
