This can be read as a standalone even though it is book two of the series. Mallory give enough back story to help a new reader not feel like they are lost and she doesn't rehash a lot to slow the story down for anyone that has read The Cocky Thief.
It picks up shortly after the Cocky Thief ends with Melody in deep withdraw after seeing her mother (Isobel) shot and killed in front of her. After speaking with her sister Toni and getting no new information on the men responsible for her mother's death, Melody decides that she needs to get up and out and stop relying on other people to find those men responsible. She wants revenge. She decides to start looking for "Baldie" the one that actually pulled the trigger and "Blondie" the other man who was there at the time of the shooting. She ends up at a gala for an associate of Baldie and Blondie's boss when see spots Blondie.
Adam (Blondie) is surprised when he looks up and sees Melody across the room. She is not supposed be here. He didn't let her go so she could end up here and get herself killed.
Melody can't believe her eyes when she see Adam but then he is gone and she can't find him. She finds him in the stairwell getting beat on by four other guys and intervenes on his behalf so she can question him about her mother's killer. They end up at her hotel room where Adam is pretending to be more hurt than he really is and ends up drugging Melody and escapes. She can't believe how she let him drug her and now she goes looking for him. She ends up finding him in the swamps of Louisiana where they negotiate a deal for him to help her find Baldie.
This is where it gets good! There is action, suspense, cons, armed goons, running form police and those goons, and sexual tension that leads to hot, steamy romance. It grabs you with chapter one and does not let go. I could not read it fast enough!
I recommend this book, series and author! You will not be disappointed!
I volunteered to read a free pre-released copy for my honest opinion. My honest opinion is that I liked it so much, I went ahead a bought it even though I already had a free copy!
The characters are well-developed and complex. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me turning the pages and hold my attention. As always, this author has produced a well-written, layered story that I didn't want to put down. So, I didn't. I binge read the first three books in the Stolen Hearts Seris.
Not only do I recommend reading The Beautiful Thief, I recommend reading the entire Stolen Hearts Series. I've already pre-ordered the fourth book in the series, The Reluctant Thief.
And Mel just wanted a normal life, too bad everyone's idea of normal is a myth, with an idiot ex and an abandoned wish of the perfect family with the perfect home and perfect white picket fence, Mel will have to find her own vision of 'normal'
Crow has made this multi-series storyline a must read!!!
It is a negative beginning with no promise of any salvation from that negativity.
