Beautiful Things: A Memoir Hardcover – April 6, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
“I come from a family forged by tragedies and bound by a remarkable, unbreakable love,” Hunter Biden writes in this deeply moving and “unflinchingly honest” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir of addiction, loss, and survival.
When he was two years old, Hunter Biden was badly injured in a car accident that killed his mother and baby sister. In 2015, he suffered the devastating loss of his beloved big brother, Beau, who died of brain cancer at the age of forty-six. These hardships were compounded by the collapse of his marriage and a years-long battle with drug and alcohol addiction.
In Beautiful Things—“an astonishingly candid and brave book about loss, human frailty, wayward souls, and hard-fought redemption” (Dave Eggers, New York Times bestselling author)—Hunter recounts his descent into substance abuse and his tortuous path to sobriety. The story ends with where Hunter is today—a sober married man with a new baby, finally able to appreciate the beautiful things in life.

Review
—The New York Times
“An unflinchingly honest look inside the First Family.”
—EW
“His journey is…deeply relatable for others living with addiction.”
—USA Today
"A gritty and shocking Biden family portrait that proves you never really know the burdens another person carries."
—People
“…a memoir at once harrowing, relentless and a determined exercise in trying to seize his own narrative from the clutches of the Republicans and the press.”
—The Washington Post
“I’ve never read a memoir like this before … it is extraordinary … you think you know his story … but this book, about addiction, about how many times Hunter Biden could have died, the President’s son, it’s breathtaking.”
—Brian Stelter, CNN's Reliable Sources
"...ineffably sad and beautifully written, tears the tabloid face off the story about an American family that has experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows."
—Maureen Dowd, The New York Times
"Grounded and gritty and self-realized, Beautiful Things ... is, at its core, as honest an account of addiction and grief as is possible to clearly see either of those two things ... The book operates on a Biden-esque strategy of underpromise, over-deliver ... it’s one we can all, in some way, see ourselves or our families or our hearts in at the same time."
—Vanity Fair
“I did not have high expectations for Beautiful Things …. I was wrong. Tears were flowing even before page 10. No one who has spent the better part of the last six years burning out the neural circuits of his brain with crack and drowning his grief over his brother’s death with booze has a right to be this vivid and effective a writer. I was stunned into submission … After a few pages I was wondering if I was reading the late Rolling Stone scribe Hunter S. Thompson, who turned his drug-induced adventures into stories, and not Hunter Biden … Beautiful Things is a heart-rending, but surprisingly tender account of one man’s remarkable journey to redemption and self-acceptance.”
—Tony Norman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"In an era of indulgent political memoirs that seek to promote a candidate’s platform and cast the family as picture-perfect, Beautiful Things stands out for its raw truths ... Hunter Biden has published a book worthy of that MFA he skipped to pay the bills. Maybe America has a first son’s story of addiction to help it finally confront this deep problem that has haunted so many families across the nation."
—Time.com
"Hunter Biden has experienced some harrowing shit. But his willingness to look back on his ugliest moments without blinking is a genuine achievement. In the past 4 years, we’ve seen plenty of political memoirs with lurid details and wild accusations from those close to the Oval Office. But few have been so honest about their most humiliating moments and open about the hard, slow work of healing and reconciliation."
—GQ
"Sometimes moving, sometimes funny, often horrifying, thoroughly heartfelt, and believable."
—Kirkus Reviews
“In AA we say it doesn’t matter if you come from Yale or jail, all addicts are the same. In his harrowing and compulsively readable memoir, Hunter Biden proves again that anybody—even the son of a United States president—can take a ride on the pink horse down nightmare alley. There are plenty of memoirs about the Three Rs (rum, ruin, and redemption), but there are sections in this one that stand out with haunting clarity. Biden remembers it all and tells it all with a bravery that is both heartbreaking and quite gorgeous. He starts with a question: Where’s Hunter? The answer is he’s in this book, the good, the bad, and the beautiful.”
—Stephen King
“This is an astonishingly candid and brave book about loss, human frailty, wayward souls and hard-fought redemption. Beautiful Things is so concise, so unflinching and propulsive, that outside of turning the pages and occasionally picking my jaw off the ground, I didn’t move between the first page and the last.”
—Dave Eggers, New York Times bestselling author of The Circle and The Captain and the Glory
“Hunter Biden writes beautifully of almost unsurvivable loss, and the amazing grace of family love. His mom and dad, Jill and Joe; his baby sister and mommy, who died when he was young; his cherished daughters and the love of his life, Beau—they are all here, fully alive. He writes about growing up Biden, his marriages, his father’s years with Obama, his own successes and failures, his work with the World Food Program and Burisma, his visits to refugee camps and crack houses. He writes of his savage alcoholism and addiction with rare honesty, of his recovery with stunned gratitude, of broken hearts, resurrection, beautiful things.”
—Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author of Bird by Bird and Almost Everything
“Beautiful Things, Hunter Biden’s devastating memoir, covers much ground, but at its core is an addict’s journey—from the first stolen sips of alcohol in a childhood marked by great loss, to the grim purgatory and lethal despair of late-stage crack addiction. With disarming humility and candor, Hunter’s unflinching account lays bare both the sustaining power and hard limits of love and family.”
—Bill Clegg, New York Times bestselling author of The End of the Day and Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man

- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021This memoir by Hunter Biden is most remarkable for its extremely courageous disclosures about the depths of depravity, despair, and loss in drug and alcohol addiction. It is particularly poignant in that Hunter is the President's son, and how embarrassing all of this revelation must be for him and for the President. I read this book because I have loved ones in the throes of addiction, and I wanted to better understand the disease from inside the mind of an addict. And I don't see how anyone could have been more transparent in this disclosure than Hunter has been. Additionally, he shows how this disease can unwittingly take seed in junior high and high school when parents very often don't expect it and could not prevent or control it if they did expect it. I think that Hunter took on way too much as a young husband and father, and he was exhausted when his brother died, upon which spiraled his disease. And he had never dealt with the deaths of his Mommy, as he calls her, and his baby sister, by the time that, Beau, his brother, died. So it all became too much for this sensitive artist-man. He had not ever really given himself credit for all that he had accomplished--mostly praising his father and brother. And coming from this very service-oriented, political family, it would have been unthinkable for Hunter to have studied art or painting and writing, in particular, which is probably what he should have done. I was struck not only by the depth of candor of these revelations, but also by what a good writer Hunter is, in a casual, easy flow of words that made me look forward to reading his book each night before bed. Partly, one is also struck by the words in Al-Anon, a group for the relatives and friends of alcoholics and addicts, which state, "There but for the grace of God, go I," and we are grateful to be sitting cozily, safely in bed reading of Hunter's harrowing journey into Hell and back. And we root for him, even once we have finished the book, because we know how hard that commitment to sobriety is, and because we are concerned for his long-term health after his self-tortured odyssey. My one criticism of this memoir is that I did not feel that Hunter gave his first wife, Kathleen, enough credit for parenting their three daughters so well while he checked out into drug and alcohol oblivion. And as a woman, I also did not appreciate that he appears to point a finger of blame at her for having once said that "she would never forgive him." She had a truly hard row to hoe also, while he was missing in action, yes in the throes of his disease, but also, indulging his illness, rather than fighting like hell to get well. Of course his first wife had fallen out of love with him, and who could blame her for her own anger and being made to do All of the nitty gritty parenting while Hunter was off trying to "disappear"? Kathleen was given short shrift, and blame was cast upon her, when Hunter needs to own ALL of his illness--ALL of it, and not hide behind a shadow of guilt upon Kathleen. But overall, this is a good read, and I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2021Hunter, I have waited till now to write a review on this book that I read quite a while back. I wanted it to come from my heart and soul, just as you did in the book. You are a beautiful soul, and have a wonderful heart. I wish you the best on your recovery. I know it is not easy to get off anything that we become addicted to. I smoked for years and now have issues from it. It has to be the right time for us to do what we have to do. Your book will hopefully help so many as you are so upbeat and I can tell that you kept on trying. I have to agree with you, had someone done an intervention on me, I would have probably walked out just as you did. I don't feel that they are right and never have. Surprises don't turn out most of the time, but with an intervention? Its the worse!! I have a friend who was cross addicted to prescription drugs and alcohol and it took her a lot of time to get free. You are an amazing person, and you have come along way, and you have miles to go, you are still in your prime and now you will find it easy to keep going on with your plans and decisions. Thank you so much for this amazing book. My own husband had an issue with crack cocaine when I met him and it almost destroyed our new relationship, however he was able to get off and has worked hard and done well since then. I think everyone should read this book and we all know someone in our family or friendships who are suffering, this book is amazing and wonderful. It just shows how one can recover and move on. Hunter was put through so much as a little boy, I don't know how he handled it, losing his mom and baby sister and then later in life losing his best friend, his brother, that is not easy, not many of us have been through that much. I loved this book and learned a lot and hope all of you will read it and understand what Hunter's life was about and how it changed for the better.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2022Very well written, an authentic account of the struggles that accompany addiction. However, he should have left out the inaccurate accounts of his overseas dealings, and, family involvement. He should have left the Trump children out of this, as they were in business WAY before their father went into the political arena....comparing apples to oranges...he didn't need in the book.
His account of loss and addiction, and it's impact on his life are very inspiring.....it was a good read, however, laced with too many political inaccuracies.....should have left all of that out, we all get an overload of it every day from MSM.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2021This was an incredible book. Don't look at all the reviews saying "Stop the steal!" or saying terrible things about the Biden family. Those people are mean-spirited Q-Anon stinkers, and none of them bought the book.
This book is not what you'd think. Hunter and his family have been through some stuff, you don't realize the impact his decisions had on him and President Biden. You learn to love him, the death of his brother literally changed who he was and is now. I wasn't aware that they were that close but they were best friends their whole lives. And Beau was a great guy, he took care of Hunter until Hunter had to take care of him.
This book is heart-breaking because it's so real. Addiction doesn't get as much attention as it should for being a real disease. There are also happy moments, great stories, and you are left with a message of hope. I'd like to think if I ran into Hunter, we'd be good friends. He seems like a very genuine guy that loves his family and is just doing things one step at a time.
So ignore those other reviews. This book is fascinating.

TrudyReviewed in Canada on May 11, 20225.0 out of 5 stars Difficult read but gives hope at the end
I have never really grasped what goes into making an addict or what that is like. Hunter gives a straight forward unblinking guided tour of what it is like. I hope those with this disease find someone like Melissa and his Dad to help them get finally get a leash on the monster. He is living proof people do manage that. It helps show the hell the family and friends go through witnessing this happen to someone they love. How Joe Biden lives through losing his first wife and daughter, his one son to cancer and nearly losing his other son to drugs and comes out still able to love, laugh and work to keep his country heal, I have no idea. The world is very blessed to have him as a model for how to live and a living proof that we can make it. I hope the United States comes to appreciate what a gift he is before he dies and before the end of his second term. I hope Hunter keeps up the fight and his good work.
Amazon CustomerReviewed in Canada on April 13, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful! Gut wrenching, but beautiful!
Biden’s writing is very vivid. Going through the loss of his brother with him, I cried for the day I will have to say farewell to one of my sisters, who like Beau was to Hunter, are my best friends. Then his journey into the depths and depravity of addiction broke my heart in another way. First, for helping me better understand the demons loved ones have battled. When he paused his story to acknowledge that describing the feelings associated with having a hit made him feel the desire all over again, I was heartbroken all over again. His honesty about the intensity of the struggle is incredibly powerful.
MacanuckReviewed in Canada on April 21, 20214.0 out of 5 stars Overcoming addiction
A good view on what it takes. Was he lucky to be born a good looking male American to Joe Biden? In more ways than even he acknowledges to be sure. Most of all his father’s unconditional love saved him. Family is everything.
