If there is any use of Mr. Crane's artwork, it is miniscule and unrecognizable. The book even gives bio information to Mr. Crane which is also very misleading. While I believe it is completely incorrect to imply that Mr. Crane's work is included, the designs are very pretty. The publisher should correct the misinformation immediately.
The 96 pages of designs are detailed and many contain intricate and small areas to color. You will need small nib pens/markers and sharp pencils for those areas.
Many of the designs spread across two pages with integral portions of the design being lost into the binding area. In my copy of the book, the pages line up fairly well.
What bothers me a bit is the number of wall-paper style (repeating) designs. Twenty-eight pages of the book are in this style with several others fairly close (slight detail changes on gloves, etc. keep them from being totally repetitive.) That is close to one third of the book. If the publishers had placed these repetitive designs behind the more unique designs throughout, I could have treated them as waste pages and thus be allowed to use color medium that bleeds through the page (see below.) But that was not the case.
This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium.
96 pages of detailed and intricate designs based on Beauty and the Beast. Includes many pages which include design elements licensed through Shutterstock rather than designs unique to this book. Also includes many repetitive wall-paper style designs.
Printed both sides of the page
Paper is heavyweight, white, slightly smooth and non-perforated
Designs merge into the binding
There are many designs which spread across two pages
Sewn Binding. You can remove several pages in whole at one time by snipping several threads. I won't do that as it will disturb the continuity of the design.
Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page
Water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens do not bleed through or leave shadows on the back of the page. Gel pens require additional drying time.
Colored pencils work okay with this paper. It is slightly smooth which made blending with a blending stick a little more difficult (slightly smeary.) I was able to get good pigment and to layer colors well. I tested both wax and oil based pencils with similar results.
"Beauty and the Beast" features 93 pages of artwork, a title page, and 2 pages of additional information. It measures approx. 8.75 x 11.25 inches and is sewn into a matte finish cover with gold foil accents- the inside of which is fully illustrated and colorable. Featuring a variety of line drawings inspired by the classic fairy tale, this book is appropriate for colorists of all ages and skill levels.
The paper in this book is bright white and medium weight(think light cardstock). All pages are double sided and non-perforated. Most mediums are okay to use, but alcohol based markers will bleedthrough. As always, be sure to test any new products on a text page and place several blotter sheets under your current project to prevent color transfer or pressure indents.
As implied by the title, the artwork in this book is inspired by the original story of "Beauty and the Beast". Inside you'll see Belle, her father, and the Beast - along with literary quotes, patterns, birds, flowers, and butterflies. There are approx. 13 quotations and most of the images spread across 2 pages- making it difficult to remove them without difficulty. Many of the pages are printed with black backgrounds and detail level varies from simple to complex. Print quality is nicely done and picture completion time should range from 2-8 hours(may be slightly different for each individual). Overall, this is a pretty book that would be best suited for colorists who enjoy fairy tales/literary imagery.
There are books on Beauty and the Beast that facilitate enjoyment on various levels. And today we're looking at a beautifully drawn coloring book from Silver Dolphin Books that has quotes from the original story.
This is a quality product that older children, teens, and adults will enjoy coloring with highly detailed drawings that will fascinate and draw out the creative spark in the most avid "colorers." The designs are quite intricate and very pretty reminiscent of Walter Crane's art. Coloration will require very fine points and care to be done well.
DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from MMPublicity to facilitate a review. Opinions are my own and freely given.
If you like coloring flowers, birds, or victorian themes then this book is for you. The pages are a heavy cardstock, but a lot of the designs continue on both pages so you probably wouldn't want to tear them out and frame them.
This coloring book is a way to share your love of the story with your child, coloring the pages together or as a reminder for yourself. Spend quiet evenings coloring in the detail of the flowers, or Belle's dress, or the Beast's castle. The end of the book shares the history of the story as well as the authors and illustrator. It's a treat for every fan of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
