Beauty and Wisdom Paperback – November 20, 2013
|New from||Used from|
Robbie Kaye traveled across America to create a delightful and poignant photographic essay of women in their 70s, 80s and 90s at their weekly beauty parlor visits. Her photographs reveal the tenacity, fortitude and resolve of women who embrace the beauty and wisdom afforded by their age, while opening a window on a world that has slowly begun to fade. Dedicated to challenging the perception of aging and beauty, and featuring a collection of essays by women ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s, Robbie Kaye’s new monograph is a tribute to a group who has paved the way for generations to come.

This is a beautiful book and a perfect buy for anyone interested in people of any age!
Beauty and Wisdom captivated me so completely that I read it through then, taking my time to savor each story, each photograph. In her introduction, the author wrote: “I looked into the eyes of older women and discovered their vibrant beauty, wisdom and dedication to self-care.” Through the lens of her camera, Robbie Kaye captured for me the element of vibrancy that she discovered within each woman that she met, interviewed and photographed.
Thank you, Robbie Kaye for reminding me of the legacy given us by women who are now often seen as merely, “old;” for giving me rich perspectives on age and beauty – priceless views, especially as my body ages; and for igniting in me sweet memories of my grandmother.
Beauty and Wisdom is a wonderful gift to purchase; I’ve just ordered a copy for a friend.
From the moment, I looked at the first photograph and read the first words I was hooked. Tears welled in my eyes as the Introduction, and Foreword drew me into the book allowing me to open my eyes more fully and look at these fabulous photographs with a new appreciation. I looked at each crows-foot, twinkle in an eye, and line around the mouth, it was if I could see fully for the first time. Not only did it enable me to accept a part of my own aging process, but my eyes were opened to the glorious beauty of each of these women. The joy, life stories, and vim and vigor of these women entered my heart and allowed me to become more complete in myself.
Robbie Kaye, has done more than bring us a photographic history of women and the fast dying weekly beauty parlor visit, she has brought at least to this reader a glimpse of something more beautiful than I had considered possible. She gave me a glimpse of both the past and a means to move forward with my own maturing.
Ms. Kaye’s, Beauty And Wisdom, has forever changed the way I look at splendor and life. It is a book to be shared, and reread for it will keep on giving way past the first look.
Women who are aging should not be put on a shelf after they had finished raising their children. These are the women who broke the ground for everything we have the ability to become today.
I recommend this book to everyone, for the lasting splendor it will bring to your heart and soul.
Photographer Robbie Kaye has captured the beauty of the older woman in this collection of fascinating photos, and she has paired these images with essays from a wide selection of women with their thoughts on aging gracefully.
I particularly love what author Beth Hoffman contributed to this lovely book -
"A big part of beauty is attitude with a hefty sprinkling of chutzpah. Add some genuine kindness to the mix and it's intoxicating. There is nothing more attractive than a woman who exudes confidence, has embraced her passion and stitched life experiences - the good and the bad - into a tapestry of wisdom."
This book should be shared with women and girls of all ages. Older women will appreciate the outlook of their peers on the importance of taking care of yourself, younger women will benefit from the wisdom imparted by other women, and young girls can be taught to appreciate the aging process instead of fearing it!
I highly recommend this book!
Their self care rituals, captured through the amazing eye of Robbie Kaye in Beauty of Wisdom demonstrate lives lived and shared fully. Thank you Robbie for your dedication to illuminating the world of these lovely women and challenging the hollywood culture --you've shown us true beauty and wisdom.
