To begin, the names are quite confusing. For this line (Beautyrest Black), the only particular difference is the pillow-top/amount of memory foam on top of the individual pocketed coils. The price point for each mattress is almost directly proportional to how plush it is. From least expensive/most firm to most expensive/most plush it is: Alexia, Ava, Evie, Kate.
When I tried these in store, you can feel a pretty substantial jump in softness and 'memory foam' squish between the mattresses (approximately an additional inch foam for each level). I personally prefer a pretty plush mattress, so I went with the Evie. For me, the hybrid mattress was great-- I get the comfort of a pretty thick pillow top and memory foam (1/2 inch pillow, 3 inch memory foam), but still have the ever-so-slight sink to the support of the coils.
I've had it for a few nights and I sleep very well-- plan ahead, this mattress does off-gas due to the amount of memory foam (I let it air out for about eight hours the first day-- it didn't affect my sleep, but the odor was still noticeable when I went to bed).
I came across this at a big brand department store and it was a fantastic deal. Of course buying a mattress is always 'a fantastic deal' as retailers are always announcing '60% off retail prices this weekend!!!' yet every weekend is 60% off 'retail prices' ... Has anyone ever paid full retail price for a mattress? Case in point the 'mattress liquidation store's in my home town has had bright yellow 'Going out of business ... Store Closing! All mattresses must go!' signs in their windows for the past 5 years. Slow close.
Anyways, I bought the display model at 80% off which worked out to about $700 for the mattress and box spring.
The Evie is an interesting concept. A 'Plush Firm' mattress. What's next? A slow fastball? A miniature big screen television? A tiny oversized sofa? The top does have a memory foam that is fairly cushiony but there is no mistaking the fact that this is a firm mattress. I prefer a plush pillow top ... This would be too firm for me. However I bought it for my guest room where it will be used once in a blue moon and I figure it's a good thing to have because it's in between total firm or total plush. A $200 - $300 featherbed would probably make it feel more luxurious.
The bed seems to be constructed well. I know Beautyrest Black is the top of the line for Simmons. I believe I slept on one at a Ritz Carlton once. There is some side sag when you sit on the edge of the bed. I'm 6'4 and 230 lbs. and don't notice any middle sag when I lay on it for the night. Some reviews mention this which scares me. However as mine is a display model, it seems to have held up well to lots of testing in the store.
Maybe those who say it says are not using the right box spring with it? Or maybe mine would sag too if it was used as a daily sleeper. In any case, its good for my guest room and always gets compliments.
The one thing I'm not thrilled about is how high the bed sits on a box spring and frame. It's been impossible to find a headboard because the bed sits so high because of the mattress' thickness that it pretty much looks a bit odd being so tall in the room.
Overall, the Evie impresses. I wouldn't pay $3-4,000 for it! But for $700 all-in, I'm happy with the deal and performance.
It isn't because we are heavy. It is because the poorly constructed mattress sags no matter what. Both my husband and I wake with backaches every morning. Do not buy the Beautyrest Black series. Not worth the money.
