Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The filming of the B flat Trio was
one of the Beaux Arts Trio's last
activities with Bernard Greenhouse
who retired shortly afterwards. Both
performances here are deeply
expressive, with unexpected shadows
in the sunny B flat Trio, revealing
hidden depths to Schubert's work.

Review

The Beaux Arts cellist [Bernard Greenhouse] brings lovely phrasing and a true simplicity of line, so right for Schubert memorably in the lovely slow movement melody of the Trio No 2 in E flat. --Gramophone Classical Music Guide

By J Scott Morrison HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on May 11, 2011
Format: DVD
The first time I ever heard the Schubert Piano Trios it was the Beaux Arts Trio performing. Not long afterward I bought the Beaux Arts' LPs of the works, later converting to their 2CD set Schubert: The Piano Trios. I can't count the times since then that I've heard performances and recordings of these works -- as well as performing them myself as pianist -- and the Beaux Arts has remained my odds-on favorite. I'm willing to admit that this might be because I fell in love, fell hard, when I first heard these Trios and you know how it is with first loves! When this never-before-released DVD of live BBC telecasts became available I was eager to acquire it. These performances are both filmed at the Signet Library in Edinburgh but ten years apart, the E Flat in 1977 and the B Flat in 1987 just before cellist Bernard Greenhouse retired. The room they're playing in is has tall Corinthian columns and a decorative barrel-vault ceiling and a colorful stained glass window (seen in the B Flat), and a beautifully decorated door (seen in the E Flat), nice visual touches. The performances are just as you'd expect with the Beaux Arts: lyrical, passionate, expressive. Even though Greenhouse, born in 1916, was close to retirement his command of his instrument is magisterial and of course there are absolutely gorgeous things for the cello to play in both trios. As I write this I'm hearing Greenhouse play that lovely melody in the Andante of the B Flat; it's the kind of thing that makes you sit back and forget to breathe.Read more ›

I first encountered these works in vinyl format: Opus 99 in the hands of Oistrakh, Oborin and a Russian cellist I have never encountered since; Opus 100 in a recording from the Prades Festival featuring Stern, Horszowski and Casals. Both have remained my favourite interpretations of these inspiring works ever since, despite exposure to live performances by several eminent trios, including the Beaux Arts. It is something of a paradox that the number of performing trios falls far short of the number of quartets, or that composers lavished so much more of their creative efforts on the latter medium. So many trios tend to be ad hoc collaborations, whereas quartets stay together and grow together over several decades. The Beaux Arts Trio is an exception, and here is the rub: rather than being three established concert virtuosi who have come together to play at a special occasion, usually an International Festival, they are solid workhorses who devoted their entire careers to this particular musical form. The choice confronting anyone wishing to purchase a DVD of the Schubert Trios is the present performance costing $19, and a rendition by the more glamorous trinity of Stern, Istomin and Rose for $99 ( Amazon prices). In terms of value, there is no competition, and although I have heard the latter group in performances of Beethoven and others in the flesh and on audio records, I have never heard their DVD version.
In recommending this disc, it is primarily for the poetry and magic of Schubert's music that stands at the pinnacle of the chamber repertoire. Anyone who does not know it is missing something truly special. As for the rest, it does not in my view merit the 5 stars that the two current reviewers have awarded it. One is a 23-word uncritical declamation that I choose to ignore.

This is a wonderfully done presentation. The two trios are performed in the same setting but on different occasions. The playing is wonderful!!
