Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1-This small book provides an elementary-level look at the way even an acorn plays an important role in the ecosystem. From the acorn comes a tree. The tree is a home to birds that scatter seeds. Seeds become flowers that bear appetizing fruit. The fruit attracts hungry chipmunks that entice hunter snakes. A watchful hawk, however, swoops down to catch its slithering prey. As the hawk stands guard in the oak tree, an acorn falls. And so another tree is born, and another, and soon there is a forest. Each page is laid out with only a few words or a single phrase. The pen-and-ink illustrations have an earth-tone palette and are enhanced digitally. The back matter consists of a glossary of important terms, such as ecosystem and saplings, and provides further information on how acorns nourish the forest animals. A few paragraphs explaining the importance of forests to the environment, specifically those in the Cumberland Plateau, is appended. VERDICT For the youngest readers and listeners, this is a simple but attractive introduction to nature's life cycles.-Roxanne Burg, Orange County Public Library, CA

When I was a child I never imagined that one day I would be a published author. Reading was so important to me. I ran to the bookmobile every week and exchanged one tall pile of books for another. At school, I read every biography and novel in our small library. And at the holidays, a book was the most treasured gift. Fifty-eight years later, I still have my original copies of BLACK BEAUTY, HEIDI and KIDNAPPED.

Today I'm still an avid reader. It's impossible to keep up with all of the wonderful literature that debuts each year, but I try. While traveling in the car, I listen to audio books and marvel at how talented readers bring the words to life. At home, I read as many of the newest picture books and middle grade novels as I can manage. (Some for industry research, but most for pure fun!)

As you can see from my own published titles, I have a lot of diverse interests from geology to animals to humor to the teaching of writing and more. The best part about writing for children is meeting my audience. There's nothing more rewarding than learning that one of my books is important to a young reader.

So, what's coming out next? Sprinkles and Swirls: A Fun Day at Fun Park - my first graphic easy reader from Ready-to-Read at Simon and Schuster debuts in December, 2021. And soon after in 2022, Lift, Mix, Fling! Machines Can Do Anything at Greenwillow Books.

I purchased this book to use with some of my younger students. This is a brilliant read.

With very few words, this book literally goes through the food chain of how one thing interacts with the next. For example a fruit leads to a chipmunk. As we read this book, it literally blew me away.

On the first hand, this book is very easy to read and the illustrations are captivating and eye catching. For children who cannot sit for a long time or who want to read a fast book, this one is just the right length to expose them to the food chain without being to overwhelming.

I also liked how this book was not to wordy. This allowed my students who liked longer books to ask questions and for me offer them more information leading to deeper conversation on how the food chain works.

Overall, this is a great read. I am happy to have it in my collection.

Not having actually thumbed through the book before purchasing it for my 3 year old grandson, I was amazed when the book arrived. Our grandson loves playing with acorns in the fall. They are gathered up as God's natural treasures with pride as he hands them out to us all, fills his dump trucks with them and hauls them around the yard dumping and going back for more, brings them inside for art projects, and the like. So it seemed a great purchase sight unseen. I was amazed and not disappointed. It is actually deep in thought for a 3 year old but plants the seed for higher level thinking as he matures. I am a retired elementary teacher and see a world of concepts being taught by discovery and discussion as it is being read.....food chain, cause and effect, what if?, etc. This is done basically with only one sentence per page. Ingenious! But sparks a world of discussion and explanation. NOW...for the illustrations.... BEAUTIFUL! Good job!

I live in Ireland over 3,000 miles from my little grandson in South Carolina, US. I often order age-suitable books for him from Amazon US. On one of our recent face-time visits he showed me some acorns he'd collected while visiting his aunt (my older daughter) who lives in the mountains of Western North Carolina. We had a very animated conversation about the acorns. I wanted to help satisfy his curiosity even more so I searched for a suitable book and came upon this one. It had overall good reviews and based upon them, I ordered it to be shipped to his house. His Mom (my younger daughter) sent a message saying he absolutely loves the book and has been 'reading' himself to sleep with it ever since it arrived. She said the illustrations are beautiful and she's very pleased with my choice.

This very short and beautifully illustrated book shows the young reader how different parts of the ecosystem work together to create something much bigger than an acorn. Mrs Schaefer, a gifted teacher, and her son, (proof that an acorn doesn't fall far from the tree), have collaborated to bring the young reader into a deeper awareness of the intricacies of nature and how it all works together.

Great book to read for food chains or food webs. It is defiantly a really easy read. But you can have discussions about the food chain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely lovely, peaceful and engaging book

This is a book that we are really loving. It has simple words that tell a clever story.

Each item starts with ‘Because of a’ and so the book has a rhythm and sense of calm.

‘Because of an acorn, a tree.
Because of a tree, a bird’

Coming all the way back round to
‘Because of an acorn, a forest’.

This has prompted our first discussions of a life cycle; how nature relies on each part working for it to carry on and on, in a way that is accessible and appealing to children.

The illustrations are just lovely, clear, colourful and true to life.

I have been quite moved by this little book and hope others will adore it as much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, story lacks oomph
Reviewed in Canada on September 14, 2023
The illustrations are beautiful and I love the overall theme of the book (bought for A is for Acorn unit in our nature alphabet homeschool program), but I wish the story had more than 2 words per page. I was expecting a bit more detail in the text for a 25$ book. A bit too simplistic for my 3 yr olds, and they're not that old. They can listen to much longer/more detailed stories. I prefer "little acorn."
