Because I'm Awesome starts off very well. The title track is catchy and has fun, amusing lyrics such as "I always tell you how great you smell / it's because I'm naturally de-oderized / you're stronger, faster, and can spell!" It's very upbeat and a good opener.
Unfortunately, most of the following songs don't have that same lyrical spark, and the pedestrian musicality of the group only exacerbates the problem. The songs are short enough as it is, but then they contain an unreasonable amount of nonsense words such as "hey, hey, hey," "no oh, no oh," "lalala," and the like. "Out of L.A." is the worst offender by far. There are also modulations found in 4 of the 13 songs, a clear indication that they lacked the substance to hold attention for their full lengths without using one of the least interesting tricks in pop music.
On the bright side, "Brand New Key" has a good melody line, singing, and vocals, so its modulation can be forgiven. "Nobody Wants U" is also a highlight, with a relaxed feel similar to "This Crush," only it has the most lyrical substance out of any songs on the album, and its bridge contains new lyrics rather than nonsense words or an instrumental.
Overall, the music and lyrics do not express a lot of new ideas. The music is by-the-books pop punk with little to differentiate it from other groups. The lyrics are centered around typical heterosexual relationships in shallow ways, all about lust, and the distance between that and love is glossed over. But then again, that might be expecting too much of a pop punk album.

The Dollyrots Are "Awesome!"
Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2007
The Dollyrots play fun alternative music with an upbeat tempo that can fill even the most cynical with joy. The lead singer/bassist Kelly is amazing, full of spunk and vigor. Their guitarist Luis plays amazing riffs and their drummer Chris Black set a powerful backbeat. Like Gwen Stefani in her early NO DOUBT days, The Dollyrots are a fun band guaranteed to brighten your spirits on a rainy day - Because we're all awesome!

Basic generic pop punk sounds. Guitar, bass, drums are enhanced to certain degree by lead female vocals. Songs are basic musically with some catchy riffs and lyrics. It’s good but the limitations are obvious. All in all what you would expect from your typical L.A. band.

Agree with those reviewers who thought it a great album...comes at you just like Undertones, Ramones.
Great female vocals and harmony by band. Guitars never boring but exceptional- fast, innovative, always surprising. Like Undertones show in 1980, this band keeps coming at you. I guess I would call this pop punk but it reminds me of great punk from years ago.
Majority of songs are great and "This Crush" reminiscent of great slow songs from 50s, 60s with great vocals and background harmony.
Bought this out of curiosity...find it fun and will probably never find it dull- rate it with Ramones, Pistols, Blondie, Undertones. Debby Harry- you've got company.

Pop Punk...here comes the Dollyrots. This is just a fun Cd sounding a lot to me like Avril Lavigne. My favorite cut, the catchy "My Best Friend's Hot". I like this group. They sound like they are having fun, and what's wrong with that!

Great album, but the MP3 version substitutes the censored version of "Desperate S.O.S." There was and still is nothing in the description that Amazon is selling the edited version. Grooveshark has the uncensored version. Buyer beware.

Very, very catchy CD. It gets your head bopping and your foot tapping from the first song till the last. Don't expect any complicated music here (which is a good thing!). It is fun, catchy and exciting. This is some really good music!!
