The “Because Of Lucy” novella was the first book of Lisa’s that I found not long after it was published and I absolutely LOVED that and it’s follow up novella “Finding Evan”. Thus, it was no hardship to re-read them in anticipation of the book length releases, and was reminded of Lisa’s recent book, “The Same Deep Water, which upon reflection was not a new direction at the time for her, but a return to an original angsty genre. The 2016 edition of “Because Of Lucy” is a fuller and deeper version of the original story and I devoured every word. Still, I thought the book was over too soon.
Ness, is flatting with her life-long friend Abby who is a uni-student. Ness has for-gone the expectation and the funding of her parents to attend University as a med student, and has opted for freedom in the form of a soul-destroying poor-paying dead end job. She comes home from said job to a flat that AGAIN is full of drunk noisy students complete with a comatose male body in her bed, and a sh1t-faced Evan getting in her face.
Ness has seen him around, knows what he’s like, and even though he’s gorgeous, she isn’t impressed. Next morning Ness is tired, pissed off at the mess and late. She’s snarking at a sofa-crashed Evan who can’t remember where he’s gone wrong, and more importantly can’t understand why he cares. Abby has not re-fuelled Ness’ car so a chivalrous Evan runs her to work and tries to redeem himself over their next few meetings, deciding they are destined to be together somehow. “Evan ... Vanessa,” he tells her. “Evan fits into Vanessa.” Now she wants to know his story, and OMG, so did I.Read more ›
Then one night, she met Evan – he’s everything she didn’t want in a guy. He’s arrogant, man-whore, drunk but he’s also a lit major and speaks poetry as his second language and let’s not forget that he’s also SUPER hot. But there is more to him than he lets on, and soon Ness will realize that.
Evan moved away from home to escape his past and Lucy. The moment Lucy appears in his life again, it threatens his new-found relationship with Ness. It’s not only that, Ness’ previous plans may pull them apart as well.
Half of the novel, I must admit – I was looking for Lucy. Wondering who she is and what is her relationship with the characters in this story. When I found out who she is, I was surprised, and saddened. Her involvement with Evan is not what you think it is, but she’s one of the reasons why Evan could not live his life the way he wanted it to be. He’s bound to Lucy – whether he likes it or not.
Ness understood it at first, but she also believes that even good people should have their limits, she wanted Evan to understand it. But he felt it was his responsibility, his burden. This is why I fell in love with Evan – not just because he’s a cool-walking Byron and can do wonders with his tongue even when he’s not speaking. Beyond the a** exterior – he’s a good person, responsible and very loyal to a fault.
Ness and Evan’s relationship was almost perfect as well – theirs were not the type that is all-consuming and unhealthy.Read more ›
Because of Lucy is a beautiful and emotional story between Evan, a seemingly carefree college student and Vanessa (Ness), who's uptight, prickly and trying to escape her parents control by rebelling against college. Neither are happy with their lives and in trying to escape their past they find refuge in each other. This is a beautifully written story with extremely well developed characters. The underlying question throughout though is 'Who is Lucy?'
This novel will keep you guessing as to who Lucy is and along the way you watch Ness and Evans romance blossom. You watch them find refuge in each other and watch as they try to find out who they really are. This story is just beautifully written and definitely pulls on your heart strings. Lisa handles the sensitivity of parts of this story magnificently. I automatically one click any story she writes because she knows how to capture the reader instantly. Because of Lucy is no exception! You will fall in love with Ness and Evan
