I did not read the first book in this series, but this was the one I was interested in and it claimed to be a standalone so I took a chance and jumped in. I do not regret that decision. I believe I read a note saying that reading the first book was suggested, but I was not lost by starting here.
I’m a genre hopper, but I love mafia and I love arranged marriage. Unfortunately there is an overwhelming amount of disappointing books in that genre. Too often authors choose to write women as pathetic and weak, falling at the feet of a man who repeatedly treats them like trash. I will DNF so fast when I see that. I was pleasantly surprised to find that was not the case in this book.
Isabel has been sheltered from her father’s real life, and is completely shocked to find out who he really was after he passes away. She’s most surprised to find out that 10 years ago she apparently married the son of her father’s friend. Gio is equally shocked to learn of their marriage. She is determined to get a divorce, but he is not so sure that’s where they’re headed.
Lots of twists and turns in this book, which kept it intriguing and moving right along. What I really loved was that Isabel is no weeping doormat. Even though she was clueless about this lifestyle, she maintained her spine and strength. Gio was the eternal playboy, and never had to work for a woman, much less have one turn him down. Watching him figure things out and fight his attraction to his wife was very entertaining. Even while trying to push her away at times or distance himself , he was never a D bag to her, which I appreciated. She was trying to understand this world, and was genuinely clueless about a lot of things, but was never too stupid to live. That was perfection imo.
Cons: editing errors. There were punctuation errors, words that were wrong, and at least a couple missing words. It wasn’t horrible, and only took me out of the story a couple times. I’ve definitely seen worse 😏
Overall, a great story with some pretty interesting side characters, and the rising new generation of leaders.
