Brodie has lost his fiancé and uses this as an excuse to bully and intimidate Shane. When she shows up to work he is incensed (not an exaggeration) that she is a woman….yep, a woman. He and the fire department have worked hard to get a separate paramedic truck and he wants only a man to be his partner because otherwise he may be tempted to betray his dead fiancé by being attracted to someone else (WTF!!). It is an incredibly juvenile attitude to bring into a workplace and he does nothing to hide his feelings with his attitude and verbal abuse and no one stops him, indeed Shane just keeps taking it and excusing him, not because she is trying to fit in or scared for her job but because she thinks he is good looking and she wants him, just about the stupidest thing EVER. I get forgiving a lot of the people we care about but Shane has just met Brodie and he does nothing to show her he is anything other than a bully but she lets him lash out at her, use her body and throw her out as soon as it’s over and forgive him at every turn. It took over 70% of this book before any redeeming qualities came through and this was simply too much for me, but that time I was completely turned off by this character and thought Shane should’ve moved on from him and found someone who deserved her.
Brodie had a shattered soul. Shane was a miracle glue he didnt want to need. Shane battled her own troubles and insecurities whilst battling against Brodies just for being around. That was so rough.
I wanted to shake them both senseless and then hug 'em at different times, which how I knew how emotionally invested I became in their love story.
I loved and hated Brodie not only for what he did to and for Shane but what he did to himself. Shane seemed a bit weak was actually very strong in so many ways. The heart wants what it wants and sometimes it takes the brain some racking to get in line lol.
I enjoy Sable Hunter's work so much for the real places and bits of history she weaves to give you a sense of existence to the story as a whole! So many places in the story I have been myself! It was nostalgic, comforting, and exciting to feel as if you were a part of the story too! Well done! Must read ♡
The writing and the concept of the story were both really good. But, that wasn't the problem.
* Possible Spoilers*
Brodie's first love, his fiance, was killed senselessly. Shane's ex-husband was a rat. Brodie finds himself having feelings for Shane but also feeling guilty about it. I assume because of that guilt he treats Shane HORRIFICALLY! And she just takes it.
Honestly, this story is a little bit appalling. Brodie is verbally and emotionally abusive to Shane. And Shane needed to grow a spine. Of course it ends with a HEA but by then I wanted Shane to find someone else.
After everything Brodie had done and said, I don't think I'd have been able to forgive and forget. By reading "Because I Said So" you will definitely feel a wide array of emotions but maybe that's just what the author intended.
In riding this roller coaster of emotions, the author did a great job of telling a great story, of weaving a tale so compelling it drew me in and wouldn't let me go until I reached the end of the story. With when hated the hero, I still knew he was good and redeemable and I wanted to take the journey with him. I wanted him to get his happy ever after as much as the heroine.
I couldn't rush through this book, I took my time reading it. I enjoyed reading the whole story, wanting the HEA to come but not too soon. I wanted to savor the time spent with the storytelling as much as I did with the characters.
I will read this again and again.
He finally figured it out and came around, but by that time I didn't much care. The h had already been rejected by one husband and this jerk was even nastier than the ex.
Sorry, this one didn't do it for me. Your mileage may vary.
Top international reviews
Both the hero & heroine, Brodie & Shane (yes she's female) have had experiences in their past that have left understandable scars but come together when Shane takes a new post to wok with Brodie, he doesn't realise from the application form that she is female, sparks fly & I don't want to spoil the story.
Loved and fully understood these characters but there were times I wanted to hug them both and others where I wanted to give Brodie a slap (I'm not really a violent person), you'll understand when you read this.
There are nice snippets to link with both series and give you hints as to what is going on there too
