Getting pregnant in high school wasn't in either of their plans, but they still love each other. They have a wonderful seven year old daughter. Only problem is the lack of trust, feeling ugly, and the need for trust. These two can't go a day without something going wrong. They love their daughter and each other, but between bouts of fighting and sex they just hate each other. Will they make it work or call it quits...
- What’s meant to be will find a way.
- “... if you love each other you can overcome adversity, no matter what the case. Don’t give up without trying every route first.”
- As fast as a walk can be without turning into a canter, I haul ass out of the bar.
- When life gives you lemons do you make lemonade or run to the grocery store and trade them in for something better?
- “You sound like your making custody arrangements,” I say. “I am. With your vagina.”
“How does a couple start over when too much negativity has transpired between them?”
This was one of those books that I desperately wanted to love but could only “like” and it wasn’t through want of trying on my part. Normally I try and throw myself into the characters’ lives and immerse myself, imagine myself in their shoes and living their life but no matter how hard I tried, if I was Shayla, I would have left Brandon years ago. How they got to their seven-year itch is beyond me. A bit harsh??? Certainly not, read this book, let the anger bubble and fester and then you will say that Brandon was a complete a-hole too. He sort of redeems himself towards the end, but for the majority of this book I wanted to strangle him, slap him about a bit and just in general, inflict injury. The dialogue that came out of Brandon’s mouth was unbelievable and only made me intensely dislike him all the more…but anger is a great emotion to evoke from me because it doesn’t happen very often, so Jennifer Foor, I salute you…you royally peed me off and that is no mean feat!!
“I’m sleeping with the love of my life; my enemy, the only person in the world who will destroy me, and I can’t hold back. I want to eff her until there’s nothing left to fight about. We need to let it go. It’s the way it has to be. Nothing good will come from this, but I continue, because I know a part of me will never be able to stop.”
Shayla and Brandon were together through college and an unplanned pregnancy meant that they were married young and basically thrust into “adulting.” Shayla had taken all this in her stride, she loved Brandon with all her heart and was totally consumed by everything Brandon. Brandon, however, just wanted to be a teenager again, while he adored his daughter and allegedly his wife, he still wanted the single life too and in my opinion just hadn’t matured. He felt like he had sacrificed his ideals and aspirations when Shayla got pregnant, he went to work to support his family instead of doing what he wanted to do and herein lies resentment. It is this resentment that has caused a lot of their issues but Shayla has her own problems too.
“I owe myself the benefit of knowing I’m still good at something, because everything else I touch seems to turn to s***.”
Shayla was extremely untrusting and I must admit, if I was her husband, I would have been a little peeved too, however, he made her this way. While Brandon would never lay a finger on Shayla, he cut her with words, he mentally tortured her and she sucked it up like a sponge. But deep down, underneath all the resentment, loathing and fighting I could see love, Shayla and Brandon just needed to find it once again.
“Moping around miserable wasn’t helping me change the way our relationship has molded into a loveless cesspool of negativity.”
This was a story that I believe many married couples could relate to, it does make you think about your own and you cannot help but draw comparisons in some way or another. Shayla didn’t have a backbone and I think that if she had found hers earlier on in the relationship it never would have gotten this bad, however, she does find it in the end. These two though did love each other in their own way, sometimes life becomes a habit, bad habits crawl in and stay, the good ones lose their place. This was a journey for Shayla and Brandon, they had to rediscover themselves individually as well as rediscover themselves as a couple. A marriage is a partnership, they needed communication and to realise that sex was not a means to sweep it all under the rug…after all you can make a mountain out of a molehill and these two had a whole mountain range to sort through.
Marriage is hard enough but when you throw a surprise pregnancy in the bag along with just graduating from high school I would say you're heading for a failing relationship.
Shayla and Brandon both have a lot of growing up to do but Brandon was a little slow at realizing what it means to be a father and a husband.
He was a selfish ass, his needs came first.
Shayla had become the nagging, jealous and controlling wife that is making Brandon's life unbearable. I can't blame Shay because Brandon seems to
think he is still single after being married for seven years. He thinks just because he works and pays the bills that's all he has to do.
When things get really bad Shayla leaves hoping this will help them realize if they are truly suppose to be together. When Shay walks out this is when Brandon realizes what he is about to lose.
You're going to want to smack both of them at times but be patient it's well worth the read.
Thanks again Jenn Foor on another great book in the Seven Year Itch series! Can't wait for the next!

I enjoyed the storyline because many people can relate to it. The struggles are real and this story was more true to life.Read more
