Dee has been Izzy's rock for as long as she can remember. She hides behind a mask of happiness. Her smiles don't reach her eyes and her laughter isn't true. But no one seems to notice. Not until she encounters Beck.
Beck is just another of the C.S. men, but he has the uncanny ability to look at someone and know when they are hiding something. He knows that Dee is hiding behind a wall that she doesn't want anyone to break down. The only thing is that he doesn't know the whole story as to why she doesn't want to break those walls down.
Before the horrible events that happen in Axel with Izzy and her ex-husband, Dee opens up just a fraction of the way to Beck and they start a relationship. But, because of what is going on in Izzy's world, Dee and Beck keep it to themselves. But in the end, it only ends up hurting Dee more than anyone else.
Beck has to fight to get Dee back not only in his life as his, but back to her normal self. It's a fight that he's not willing to give up. He knows that when Dee is with him, she is truly herself. That's not something that he's willing to give up, in his eyes, she deserves happiness and he wants to be the one to give it to her.
The C.S. boys don't go through it without their fair share of problems that they have to help solve together. Not only that, but their entire world ends up changing forever. No one is left untouched by fear or heartache.
This book took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions.
You have Dee, a woman who has been hurt so many times in her life by every man she's ever known. She's always the life of the party, but it's just a facade to the person dying inside.
Then, you have Beck, a man that is a protector and can see straight past Dee's facade. He will fight to make her happy and to win her heart.
"Just because you let someone in doesn't mean you have to stop protecting yourself. It just means you have someone to share the job with."
"I'm so scared of you, John Beckett."
"You've got nothing to be scared of with me. Not one damn thing. You've had me in knots for months, Dee. Fighting for you, us, and this relationship might drive me mad at times, but it's a fight I want if it ends with you in my arms."
Beck was slowly breaking down Dee's heavy guarded walls, but when thoughts of the past come back, that's all it takes for her to go right back into her shell. At times, I wanted to reach into the book and shake Dee so that she could see how amazing Beck was and how much he has been there for her!! But, at the same time, you feel such compassion for her because so much has been taken away from her. Dee is what I would call a beautiful disaster.
She has faught her entire life by herself and it was hard to have someone on her side. After another brutal attack, Dee must learn to face the music and allow everyone in. Into the real Dee. The broken and scared woman that lives behind the smiles and the laughter. Can she do it? Can she finally accept the help that she needs? Can she open her eyes to realize how hard Beck has faught for her, for them?
"...it's time for me and you to start fighting the same war and not different battles."
"I stand by your side because this is where I'm meant to be. I stand by your side because you didn't have the strength to hold yourself up. That's what you do for the person you love."
"Yeah, I can do this. For this man who has been fighting for us alone, I'm finally ready to start fighting with him."
They had no idea that the battle was just beginning and a devastating heartbreak was in the near future.
"Tomorrow is never a guarantee; live life to he fullest and never stop smiling."
I might have ugly cried sooooo hard towards the end of this book. The men of Corps Security have taken a place in my heart and I couldn't take the bombshell. I couldn't imagine them not being all together forever. I was destroyed and then....Sway. Gahhh!!! That man broke me with his jar of glitter *cue tears again* Harper knows how to punch you in the gut, I swear!!
After such a tragedy, how can you bounce back? How can you keep fighting the fight you have faught for so long? Dee and Beck haven't had an easy road to travel and yet, you pull for them. You want them to be happy.
Harper did such a wonderful job with this book. Even though she killed me a little inside. hehe. I can't wait to read Cooper!!! I have to know more about these guys! They have dug their hawt selves into my heart! Dang it;)
"She thinks I saved her but the truth is, she saved me...Her love gave me a purpose, a reason, and the strength to stand by her side and fight any war that is thrown our way."
