5.0 out of 5 starsBEAUTY IS IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER
By Barbara Mojica on October 20, 2016

Charming picture book featuring a child named Becky who guides heryoung readers on a tour of her butterfly garden. Becky's garden isdesigned as a wild flower garden with water features, a pond filled with fish, birdhouses and bee houses, but most importantly it provides asafe haven for butterflies. Monarch butterflies are quickly disappearing due to the rapid expansion of roads and cities. Becky's tour leads usthrough cone flowers, monarda, asters, goldenrod and milkweed. Thisgarden is free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The monarchbutterflies lay their eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves; whichare the only kind of food they eat, but which are poisonous to humans.Once the eggs become caterpillars, Becky's dad carefully moves them to a cage where they continue to feed on milkweed leaves until they form achrysalis. After about ten days they emerge as butterflies, when theyare carefully released from their cage.

The illustrations depictBecky and her beautiful garden plants and animal friends. Story is based on Becky Lecroy, a genuine character whose parents raise monarchbutterflies in their own wild flower backyard. Nice way to teachchildren about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly and theimportance of conserving the species. Targeted for grades preschoolthrough grade four, this book should be included on classroom shelves in elementary school as well as those in libraries and environmentallyconscious parents who might want to undertake the project on a smallerscale. I personally plant milkweed in my tiny garden to encouragemonarchs to settle there. Sadly, in recent years, I have noticed adramatic drop in the lovely creatures that used to fill my backyard.

I feel it is important that all children appreciate the natural worldwe live in, they should be taught to understand how things work in thisworld. It's a lesson in life. This is a delightful story about a childunderstanding the need to provide a home and food for butterflies andcaring for the earth.

I especially liked the illustrations in this beautiful story and howthe author told the story of Becky's wonderful backyard with all itsglory - bird houses, pond, bee houses, flowers and butterflies. Ilearned a lot about how butterflies come to be. It's both educationaland endearing. At the end of the book, Becky's real-life father tells a true story of how this passion for backyard butterfly gardening came to be. Made me like the story even more. Nice job, Janet Young.

With the disappearance of thebutterflies becoming greater every year, Becky shows us that we can allhelp increase their numbers just by what we plant in our yards.
