The heroine of this story is a 14 year old. Most of this part of the story is fairly typical. You have a klutzy teenage girl who doesnt feel like she really fits in anywhere in her new school, and neighborhood. But, it takes place over the first few days. Of course she isnt going to. Mom is a crazy, absent minded, and rather neglectful person(complete role reversal). Dad's a drunk wash up. A little on the "not all there" side. For example Becky starts a load of wash only to find her dad has set it on fire because "it had maggots in it".
Becky becomes obsessed with a boy that she saw fr maybe one minute. Then he vanishes. This happens a few more times, and she becomes literally obsessed with him.
I would be interested to see if this author continues writing, and if so Id be interested in reading more in the future. I think the issues may be a new author "glitch" so to speak.
The beginning of this story felt rather disjointed and confusing. A little over half or around there some parts began to fit together a little better. But overall the age and intensity of the situations did not fit to me. I felt it would have been better if the heroine had been maybe 17 or so instead. There are some literally life changing (as in could change EVERYONE in the whole worlds life) decisions this little girl has to make and she isnt the normal heroine type personality. She is very much a little girl still and it just didnt fit for me.
What I liked the most was all the different touches of genre in this book. There was some paranormal elements and even some fantasy. Of course with so very clean romance. Almost a little too clean. This book is more along the lines of very young YA or upper middle grade.
The book is a little slow in the beginning but then it takes off and goes fast. Really fast. It's a super quick, fun read. I read it in no time at all. The characters.... most were very flushed out and written wonderfully. Becky and Danny have some cute chemistry.
I also liked that this had a lot of sports in it. That's great for those that play sports and are into that kind of thing. Perhaps it will appeal to more people. Honestly, I found myself having to google some of the teams and players mentioned in the story.
I don't like too many sports but I found myself liking this book! That's got to speak volumes for how good this book is! So seriously, even if you're on the fence about this book, give it a chance. Get through the first 30 pages and the book is pretty awesome.
What if a single moment changed everything? This is true for Becky Michigan on her first day at a new school. Feeling lost by the new school, her life's changes, worries over her mentally unstable mother, upset over her father's fall of the wagon back into alcoholism; she sits down at a desk in her health class and soaks her white jeans with beet juice. Suddenly Danny; a charming, good looking, friendly baseball player; appears and offers her his jersey. But he disappears, and randomly reappears but nobody ever sees him but her.......because he's actually dead. The way Fisher handles the reveal of Danny's life, death and it's connections to Becky herself were done in such a way as to keep you on the edge of your seat. You can tell that Fisher knows his sports by the references to strikes, threes, rules, outs and the trivia about baseball lore. As an eighties kid, I loved the whole "Back to the Future"-esque way of handling the past to present changes and shifts in social position of the characters. I can't wait to read more of Fisher's works.
I received a free ARC from Loving The Book in exchange for my honest review.
This book was super cute, fun, and just a touch of making you really think. It had a few twists I did not expect but actually really loved. It moved along at a fast pace and kept me interested to see what was next. It was also a very easy ready so I didn't feel like I was ever lost or had to back track to figure out what had happened. It flowed very well. And the end definitely made you think about what was, what could of been, and what is. It was such a great idea and I loved it.
The Characters were likable and you found yourself invested in their story. The situations were realistic enough to be possible even with the paranormal twist. And it all made so much sense in the story that I never questioned any of it as I read. It was so well put together.
I would easily recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good, clean, unique book!
