A fitting quote from the back cover of Becoming, the tale of a young man's quest for knowledge within the hallowed halls of higher learning. Our protagonist, Jacob Price, is the everyman of thoughtful college students. He has developed a distaste for academia, grown tired of the subjectivity and flippant nature of evaluation, and the self-realization he has failed to gain only serves to highlight the meaninglessness of a diploma. In the height of his frustration, he confronts his professor, Dr. Magus, and demands more for his money. Jacob will find what he is looking for at the hands of Dr. Magus, but nothing could prepare him for this test.
Dark and brooding, Becoming is a story that weaves its way into your mind and silently bores a hole into your subconscious. You continue to feel its shockwaves after you put it down, and its images flood your memory. This is the hallmark of excellent storytelling - the hallmark of Brooke Burgess. Layer upon delicious layer can be found within his writing, his muses as far and wide as Nietzsche to Radiohead, and yet his prose is utterly readable. You will find yourself unable to stop until you have completed the story, Burgess's words and Dane Cypel's horrifyingly visceral artwork compels you to keep turning page after page.
When you are faced with the end of everything you know, what will you become?
Brooke Burgess is a gifted writer - one who has the ability to get his audience to enjoy his work beyond just a story.
His specialty is writing superbly, intelligent, dark and thought provoking stories. Stories that get you examining your life and asking questions you didn't know you had.
We all wear masks - every moment, everyday. We wear them so much that we can forget who we really are. If we're lucky, we come across stories like this that sparks our intellect, allows us to take our masks off and see our true selves.
Becoming, tells the tale of an angry and entitled Jacob Price. A university student who is convinced he is owed more than he has received and demands it from his professor.
Professor Magus sets out to teach Jacob more than he ever wanted to learn. He wanted knowledge because it represented freedom and power but what he got was struggle and pain with the ultimate truth beckoning just out of reach.
There are no easy answers and the answers that we do get are born of struggle and pain. The only truth is to stand in your own power.
The story takes you from darkly intense to a bittersweet ending with art and colours by Dane Cypel and Sara Machajewski carrying the reader through each emotional shift beautifully.
It's a high octane, intelligent and terrifying ride...hold on!
It tells the story of a disappointed college student, angry at the lack of any real fruit from his years of study. After being brushed off by one of his professors after begging for a higher grade on uninspired work, he's offered the chance to gain real knowledge of the way the world works.
What ensues is a fiery crash-course in the true nature of higher education, the freedom of adulthood, and the importance of human connection in an anti-intellectual world concerned only with the desperate commodifying of human life.
This is a smart and terrifying story not afraid to rely on subtext, and while the ending may be a little too abrupt, it's still well worth a read.
