In teaching this Original Practice (as described in the Sutta Pitaka), John avoids the confusion caused by the ‘cultural’ additions and deletions of the Dhamma seen in most current forms of Buddhism.
A few years ago I (reluctantly) joined John’s Sangha in Frenchtown NJ. I was trying to revive a spiritual practice that had been going nowhere for decades. At the time I was highly skeptical that such an “old “ teaching could be relevant today.
Two years of increasing engagement with the Path and study of the Dhamma , with support of John Haspel and the flourishing Sangha , put an end to that skepticism.
These Teachings WORK ! They bring understanding of the origins of stress and of the way to end stress.
Becoming Buddha contains a collection of crucial Suttas and the way to apply them in daily life, as taught by John in his weekly classes and in the semi-annual retreats.
It’s value lies in the support it gives for the Practice of the Eightfold Path as it was originally taught by the Buddha, in today’s world. To use it as an argument in the ongoing discussion about the relative merits of contemporary forms of Buddhism would be missing the point.
“ Ehipassiko”, as the Buddha said many times: “Come and experience this for yourself!”
