I recommend this book to anyone who wants their spirits lifted with a glimpse into a goodhearted, wild boyhood, where hard work, imagination, ingenuity, enjoying outdoor-life, time together as a family, and God all play integral parts. I think kids would get a huge kick out of having this read to them as a bedtime story, too. It's a short book, and a quick read, and the stories have a neat way of teaching valuable life-lessons mixed in with all the laughter.
I was shocked by some of the things the children did in these stories - things which would never be permitted in today's safety-conscious society. These tales make me think we may have become so safety-conscious that we lost something in the process. We need adventure, and "Becoming Tarzan" seems to me an adventure story... about the adventure of family.
We need these adventures to round out our character. We will be better off for having swung from trees, jumped from stilts, run barefoot in the woods, and even having vacuumed all the yellow-jackets from their nest (and then been faced with the dilemma of what to do with a vacuum filled with angry yellow jackets!). Fischer shares these adventures, and more.
I was most struck by the love Fischer shows through these short, eminently readable tales; the love of a father for his family, and the love of the children for one another. This is a touching, invaluable record of a bygone era. Highly recommended.
