Great common sense pointers. Handy little book.

Rainer walks through some of the pitfalls inherent in church life that we all fall into, and some ways in which we can climb out of them and bring people along with us. This book is not preachy, nor does it come up with some revolutionary new ideas that will send revival to your door. He lays out simple things that are easy to overlook but that make a huge difference.One recurring criticism of the church that is addressed here, is a particular bug bear of mine, that of church cliques. How do you expect to welcome people, get to know new people, form new relationships if every Sunday you head to your same group of people and talk amongst yourselves until it's time to leave. I have been guilty of it, heaven knows we all have, but this was a timely reminder for me and gives me pause when choosing where to sit at our pot-lucks - always with someone I don't know very well.Some of the things that struck me most, are the things that no longer occur to me due to longevity. I know where the bathroom is, I know what we are going to do during communion, I know what to expect of the childcare providers. Would someone walking in blind know that? How long is it before they ask? How many weeks are they coming before they know who to talk to?Funnily enough, I read this book at the same time that my Pastor's wife did and we spent a good ten minutes in the hallway one Sunday morning going back and forth with golden nuggets we had gained from this book and how it was affecting the way we looked around us.At the end of the day this book has served as a wake up call, to look around me on Sunday morning, to speak the words, to point out needs, to clarify for new parents what our process is when I'm serving in the nursery. If each of us can become a more welcoming person, then all of us will belong to a welcoming church.I am very glad B&H sent me this book to look at. It's definitely one I would purchase for people in the future.
