She has done the unthinkable—turned her best friend into a dark breed: part Vampyre, Lychen and Witch . . .
Kyana thought only to save her friend’s life when she fed Haven her blood; instead, she created a monster. Now the woman she thought of as a sister is under the spell of an ancient, vengeful god, determined to set him free and wreak havoc on the mortal world . . . and only Kyana can stop her.
But time is running out. In just seven days, Kyana’s Vampyre and Lychen abilities will be gone and she’ll be completely transformed into the Goddess of the Hunt—and her blood ties to Haven will be severed. By her side is Ryker—ally, demigod, lover— who will sacrifice everything to keep Kyana safe . . . even the attraction that burns between them. Together they have one chance to save Haven from herself . . . to save humanity from hell on earth.
About the Author
Sable Grace is the writing team of Heather Waters and Laura Barone,long-time critique partners and friends who came together by fluke to discover their voices fit quite nicely during a writing experiment. The story became far too interesting to put down and Sable Grace was born.
Both Heather and Laura reside in Florida, are happily married to their real-life heroes, and are, well, complete opposites. Still, there’s enough common ground for them to weave their words together in the voice of Sable Grace.

Her first hunt is Haven. She must find Haven and bring her in for trial. Haven is possessed by Cronos. Cronos wants revenge and will stop at nothing to get it. Kyana's pursuit of Haven is action packed as she follows a trail of blood and chaos in her efforts to catch Haven without harming her closest friend.
Kyana faces off with Haven (possessed by Cronos) numerous times, too many times in fact. The failed attempts to capture Cronos brought action to the pages the first couple of times. The repeated failures became redundant and made many events predictable.
Kyana's thoughts on embracing her goddess power contradict her thoughts on Ryker. Kyana is holding on to the thoughts that vamp's don't do long term relationships that they are polygamous creatures. She uses this excuse when trying to keep Ryker at a distance. She consciously acknowledges that she is losing her old self (vamp/lychen) and becoming the new Goddess of the Hunt on several occasions in the book.
I was pleased that Kyana still has Ryker in her life. They seem to be trying to figure out if a relationship is a possibility. Ryker is already at this point and he is having patience with Kyana while she figures out what she wants. I think Kyana and Ryker will make a fantastic couple eventually and their journey to that point is definitely an interesting read.
I look back on Ascension and I remember loving the book. I could not put it down. I told anyone who would listen about the awesomeness that was Ascension. I also enjoyed the novella Before the Fall. I hate that I did not enjoy this installment in the series as much as I did the other two. I do plan on reading Chosen. I have gotten too much enjoyment out of other installments in the series not to move on to the next.
- Spelling Vampire with a "y".
- The Word Lychen. (Because Lichen refers to fungus - it's not short for lycanthrope no matter how you try it.)
- The idea that if Vampires exist, so must werewolves, zombies, demons, witches, genies, banshees, and the entire pantheon of Mount Olympus
- Made up author names that sound like stripper names (that someone thinks sounds very paranormal and urban fantasy)
Whoops - I just described this book. :-)
As you can see from the above, I really thought I was going to hate this book. I was even grumbling as I started to read it. But then, within a few chapters, it wasn't so bad.
The fact is, the authors have a good sense of character and had some fun with this book. Yes, it was over the top with the types of mythological beasties made real, but the romance was fun, the magic was enjoyable, and there was a good plot/storyline. I liked Kyana (and loved Ryker) and once I suspended my sense of disbelief I found myself enjoying this one and anxious to see how it would end.
There is a bit too much point of view changing - sometimes on one page when the pov would change from Kyana to Ryker without warning - and the book needs tightening, but it's a fun read.
On a side note: this appears to be the second in a series, but it worked well as a standalone novel, though I needed a bit more explanation as to what happened to all the humans in the world.
