Clarence doesn't want to go to school, he'd rather sit and listen to stories about what life use to be like when there was color. The reapers' numbers have been dwindling for some time and it gets harder to keep the balance between worlds and reapers and humans intact. The humans are nothing but a nuisance on life itself and the reapers have other intentions for their futures, ones that require the help and easily persuaded minds of humans, a sinister plot is brewing and our realm isn't the only one in trouble.
Author R.K. Gold spins an adventure full of life and death, nature and its beauty, and three kids who carry the weight of multiple worlds on their shoulders. A read that will be sure to leave you with an introspective heart and a smile on your face.

So I did this whole thing a little backwards and I read book two before I read Beds Are For Flowers, this should have made it more difficult to understand the story but with the way R.K. writes I had no problem jumping back and forth, as a friend I admire his passion and his unique perspective with his writing and as an author I love his ability to take you on a ride and make a completely captivating story. Let's get to it✨
As far as main characters go I had no trouble at all falling in love with Clarence, he's headstrong, willing to prove his worth, and the annoying little brother we all can't help but love. Clarence is tasked with finding The Reaper in The Tree and of course he doesn't even hesitate to reach out a helping hand, oh and the hands of his friend Wakoba and older sister Jessi. They also manage to snag a reaper with the help of a flower from a certain Neighbor's garden.
While on this adventure you encounter magical creatures who's sole purpose is to make sure the kids don't reach their destination and an apathetic reaper who seems to care only for his own wellbeing and outcome. Let me just say that if I encounter a cottage in the woods with weird ladies sitting at a table, I'm running far in the opposite direction. The children also go through their own self discovery during the trying adventure, each of them coming to important realizations that only further their development in the second book.
The most beautiful aspect of this book was the nature, everything is connected human and reaper alike; Ganedyn and our realm as well. The Reapers are able to manipulate aspects of their power with their scythes and draw their power from nature as well so for my fellow earth lovers, this is the one you want to read.
The question of what happens after we die is also brought up within the pages of this middle grade fantasy as you watch young Clarence and his group of heroes deal with grief and accepting the death of loved ones.

Wrap-Up:
If you're a fan of middle grade novels pick this one up. It's a quick read, as well as being a story that will stick with you even after you're done, I've fallen in love with these characters over and over again for their humor and humanity and their willingness to make mistakes. The ending is exciting and I couldn't help but to speed through the pages. Special shoutout to Jessi's character for being a complete badass and stealer of the show with her sass, backbone, and her ability to show courage even when she feels none herself. Overall I rated this book 4/5 🌟 and I recommend it for its representation of Black and Jewish POC as well!
