From the Melos Quartet I've only found a cassette rendition of the middle (Razumovsky etc.) quartets and this cd (with its companion volume 18/3 and Op. 14), but of the dozen performances I know, these are for me the definitive recordings of these quartets. The Melos quartet plays in a staccato style with a level of energy and passion that I have not experienced in other recordings of the Beethoven quartets. The recordings are quite clean, and they place you square in the very center of the quartet in a hugely reverbrant hall. This is exciting Beethoven. If you like your Beethoven exciting, these are performances you will want to own and hear again and again.
