Yet, we all know that there are Christians who go hungry, live in poverty and are persecuted. Both Christians and non-Christians know that some people who profess to be Christian do not always live according to "Christian principles."
So, the tone has to quickly change to "spiritual" nourishment, protection and joie de vive. The point is made that the people followed Jesus after the feeding of the 5000 because He _physically_ fed them but He really wanted to give them _spiritual_ bread. Marrow gives an example of the reactions of various spiritual leaders to a person in a dark pit with a poisonous snake. Only Jesus actually takes the poison for the person and then saves him. Later, we figure out that He took the spiritual poison and saved the person in spirit--but that's no help for a physical person in physical peril, is it?Read more ›
