One of the most caustically hilarious comedians still standing, Doug Stanhope is a prince of hilarious darkness in this new standup special that finds him musing on the link between Keynesian economic theory and prostitution, how Alcoholics Anonymous is like a cult, and his opinion (hint: not favorable) of a popular television rehabilitation therapist. It's a dangerous tour de force of scathingly funny wit and savage social commentary that's not for the easily offended.
Stanhope digitally released Before Turning The Gun On Himself on March 6, 2012 and it immediately shot to #1 on the Billboard and other comedy charts. Recorded in Salt Lake City, UT at The Complex, the live companion CD/DVD is now available.

This album is short, but that works in its favor. I'm tired of bloated comedy albums, and there isn't a wasted cut on this short CD. I like to listen to a release several times before trying to put it in the context of where it fits into the comedian's overall oeuvre, but even at this early stage I can safely say this is my favorite Doug album, except perhaps "Something to Take the Edge Off." Definitely better than "Sicko," which was also good.
If you are a first-time viewer to Doug's material, I would suggest viewing a DVD first as there are several pauses which might throw a first-timer but regular viewers will understand, he is just pausing for a drink - or day dreaming about offing someone in a unique manner.
Many characterize this type comedy as alternative thoughts which are presented in a comedic manner but which have the tendency to open a closed mind to alternative ideas. I agree with that, and much of his material is bottom-line, open-minded thinking which tackles questions, and provides answers to, problems the world does not wish to acknowledge let alone tackle in any radical, meaningful way; world over-population, responsible alcohol consumption, etc.
Worth every penny; and he barely touches on religion on this CD.
P.S. his Dr.Drew bit is absolutely priceless and I commend him for saying to the world what I have felt for years.
It's listening to people like this that makes the aware among us get a sometimes much needed reassurance that: yes, our society at large is quite rather ill, repressed, unaware, etc. it's humor like this that hits the deepest chords and reaches what might as well be called a spiritual level.
he's not for people who only like clean comedy. he's a real truth teller and raw guy who's not gonna clean up his act for a family friendly reputation. his stand up feels really authentic with comedy layered throughout the performance as opposed to forcing jokes with fake setups. a real brutal warrior comic and one of my favorites.
in my opinion this is his best so far.
The world is an awful, horrible place and Doug is one of the few good things in it. The rare few who are actually sane will find in Doug's work a glimmer of hope...And a few good pieces of advice on how to live on a planet populated almost exclusively by the mentally retarded and mentally ill.
