The Rolling Stones classic 1968 album Beggars Banquet celebrates 50 years with a limited edition remastered vinyl package. This 2-LP package will come in a gatefold jacket, including a bonus 12” of their hit single “Sympathy for the Devil” in Mono cut at 45rpm, backed with an etching of the original ‘toilet’ cover. Also included is a replica of the rare Japanese flexi disc containing a phone interview with Mick Jagger from 1968, and a download code for the album plus interview. Beggars Banquet (50th Anniversary Edition) is housed in an overwrap of the “inoffensive” wedding invitation art, which was initially issued as a replacement cover when the original intended album art was rejected. The landmark album has been newly mastered by Grammy Award winning engineer Bob Ludwig, lacquers cut at Abbey Road and pressed at RTI in California on 180g vinyl. Recorded between March and July of 1968 at Olympic Sound Studios in London, mixed at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, Beggars Banquet was the first Stones album produced by Jimmy Miller, and marks the start of what is considered their most prolific album era.

The definition of the sound is much sharper on this release, so that the guitars and other stringed instruments stand out ("Parachute Woman" especially so), and the vocals are all in high-relief -- in fact, on the opening of "Salt of the Earth," it sounds like Keith Richards and the band are in the same room with you. Otherwise, the artwork and packaging have been modified slightly, and there's a whole new round of reissue production credits. And if you already have the 2002 upgrade, then there may not be a hugely compelling reason to buy this disc -- it's good, but not so much better than the 2002 version that you couldn't spend the money on something more urgent to have. That's a judgement call for the individual.

As well, what a wasted opportunity: previous re-releases - Sticky Finger, Exile, etc - have included outtakes or live versions.
Hopefully the new Voodoo Lounge will deliver.
There is no bass as others have commented but I don't know if this is a feature of the original recording or not.
Unfortunately the problems with some tracks make it impossible for me to recommend this CD. Am giving 3 stars as some tracks are fine.
Despite having probably the worst album cover - ever - a filthy toilet with graffitied walls etc; the music contained within is far more impressive.
Starting with the powerful and unique sounding, occult themed: Sympathy for the devil, continuing with; Parachute woman, the bluesy - Dear doctor, the then current political themed - Street fighting man (about the Paris student demos of 1968 - apparently - same year of BB's release) - and concluding with the gospel inspired - Salt of the earth.
With all 'Stones personnel on top form - take it you know all their names - 'Glimmer twins' et al🎤🎸🥁; Beggars banquet is an era defining classic album.original production by Jimmy Miller is top rate.
This 2018 50th anniversary edition is a fitting release.it comes with a white slipcase embossed in italics, with an invitation style to 'Beggars banquet' with appropriate R.S.V.P. at the bottom.and obscures the original vile album cover.
The spiel of: "re-mastered by Grammy award winning engineer - Bob Ludwig",is a welcome addition.with his studio techniques; he gives a crisp, clear feel to the whole album, and is an improvement on the 2002 re-release - i already own.
Despite reservations from other reviewers' - re: poor sound quality - don't let it put you off.also this is a pure original album - as far as the track listing and running order is concerned.NO,as is so often the case - dreaded, completely unnecessary bonus tracks - what a relief.
N.B.the only downside is the two page cd inner sleeve paper.sparse information and a complete lack of thought from the compilers.still gets five stars for the music though - enjoy!
