"Jessica Harris has a passion and calling for talking about some of the hard issues women of faith face such as purity, living single and women addicted to porn.
Jessica’s passion and experience are evident when she speaks to audiences of all ages and genders. Pulling from her own personal struggle with these same issues she is both captivating and inspiring. Whether you’re planning a youth event, ladies retreat, recovery meeting, or a leadership conference, her message of hope and the redeeming power of God’s love is one we all need to hear!" - Josh McDowell

so it took me a week or so to pick it up from the post office. didnt want to read it cuz then i might not have read all my new kindle smut on my days off and i really wanted to.
so today i picked it up. planned on reading a couple chapters. finished it in 3hrs. granted i can read 4 books in a day if they are fic, esp my smutty romances. nonfic takes me longer cuz i underline/highlight.
i marked this book all up and down. i may buy an amazon copy to give to my library and so i can be a verified purchaser.
i wish this was an ebook so i could just go to my kindle highlights and tweet all the things i underlined. even though it's half the book i still would be more likely to share if i didn't have to type it. i'll share 3 passages here. so hard to choose.
Ch. 3 No Excuses, pg. 34
Perhaps you see a bit of a pattern, here. It isn't that they come from staunchly religious families or are raised sexually repressed. For the most part, they're just curious. That's the one thing they all have in common. That's how it starts- a healthy sexual curiosity is misled into pornography. From there, the journey every woman takes is different.
Ch. 6 Make It Stop pgs.63-64
I wanted to gouge my eyes out. I hated that I couldn't control this. I hated that even though I could see my perfect life plan being derailed by pornography, there was nothing I could do to stop it. I tried everything I knew to modify the behavior, to get control of my life again, but it was quickly spinning out of control.
This book is a catalyst towards greater discussion on the topic of pornography addiction for women and it also provides hope for those who find themselves struggling with pornography. Beggar's Daughter is a must read for leaders (church, counselors, etc) who could potentially come across the issue in their line of work
Great job Jessica! Keep fighting!
The book is expertly written, with an easy-to-understand structure and flow. It weaves in her story, from beginning to now, with Scripture and anecdotal research from girls she's interacted with, and the truth and wisdom to set you free. As you read, you truly know you can trust what she says as coming from a place of experience and love, and it's not the same old Christianese we've all heard spouted before. It is crystal clear that Jessica is passionate about me, the reader who has struggled too, and that God's grace truly is for everyone, no matter how deeply entrenched the porn addiction is. With practical tips and emotional truths to digest, this book is a must.
Never talking down to her readers--but rather alongside them--she articulates with candor the depth of pain and grief in her life showing how God rescued her from an addiction to pornography, and restoring her to what He intended her to be--free from its grasp, and ministering to others caught in its snare.
Well worth reading, Beggar's Daughter is a moving account of God's power in rescuing women who are either in, or have been rescued from, an addiction to pornography.
