What You Need:
- Objects to draw
- Scrap paper
- 11-by-14-inch drawing paper, any color
- Pencil and eraser
- Black permanent marker
- Colored pencils, markers, or oil pastels
- Scissors
- Craft glue
Sample Project: Colorful Contours
Contour line drawings focus on the outline and shape of an object, not on details like shading. You can create contour line drawings of books, fruit, stuffed animals, art supplies, or anything!
- Draw a few practice sketches of each object. We chose a paintbrush, pencil, bottle of glue, scissors, ruler, and paint palette.
- On your sheet of drawing paper, use contour lines to draw only the outline of each object. Be sure to overlap your drawn objects, so that nothing is floating around by itself on your paper.
- Outline your drawing using a black permanent marker and then use markers, colored pencils, or even oil pastels to add color. If you used colored paper, feel free to leave some spaces uncolored.
- Cut out your drawing and glue it onto different colored paper so that it really pops!
Editorial Reviews
Review
“What a great resource for a new art teacher, a family who loves to create, or a small group art facilitator! I appreciated the ‘messy meter’ and the collection of advanced techniques for kids who are ready to spread their creative wings. I especially loved the mixed media chapter, chock full of ideas that make use of easily sourced (and free) materials. I'm inspired by Korri and Daniel's Instagram page and look forward to trying out some of these art projects with my students!”―Keira Havner, founder of Art Class PDX
“The Beginner's Art Book for Kids is a must-have for every family's library! Daniel and Korri write in a warm, approachable tone and have developed interesting, fun projects in drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking that will grab your child's interest. I love that each project has a ‘Messy Meter’ from 1-5 so you know ahead of time how much clean up will be needed. Written simply enough for kids to understand, each chapter of this book also offers inspiration parents and teachers will love.”―Sally Sanders, author of Modern Calligraphy for Kids and The Print and Cursive Handwriting Workbook
”The Beginner Art Book for Kids is a great hands-on tool for children (and parents) who wish to discover their own creativity. Along with step-by-step instructions, you will find ample information and inspiration to delve into art projects! The authors have done a great job in creating a resource filled with pencil art fundamentals, as well as a good crafting resource. Great book with lots of color and design ideas to keep you engaged!”―Aaria Baid, artist, blogger @surelysimpleblog on IG, and author of How to Draw for Kids

About the authors

Korri Freeman is a private art teacher in Downtown Russellville, AR. She graduated from college with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art in 2014 and, right before graduation, she and her husband had the opportunity to start their own business. During that time, they created a space that was not only an art gallery, but also somewhere that people of all ages could come learn about all different types of art. Since then, the business has grown and Korri has taught many after-school and homeschool art classes along with art parties, events, and summer art camps.

Daniel Freeman, of Russellville, Arkansas, is a Mixed Media Artist. He studied at Memphis College of Art, where he received his Bachelors in Fine Arts and Graphic Design in 2007. As a part of his studies at MCA, Daniel had the opportunity to travel to Florence, Italy as a summer student resident. He studied at Santa Reparata International School of Art, as well as learning the foundations of book making.
For over two decades, Freeman has engulfed himself in drawing, painting, book design, photography, and graphic design. He is known for his clever narratives that are incorporated into his artwork and now runs an art gallery in Russellville, Arkansas called Kaleidoclasm the Gallery. He, along with his wife and partner Korri Freeman, teaches art classes to all ages out of the gallery and works as a full-time artist.
In a world full of striving artists, Freeman brings a level of creativity that is uniquely his own. He continues to push the boundaries of conventional as well as experimental thinking in his art.

My favorite part is the "mess meter" that shows you just how messy a project is, so there are no unpleasant surprises after you start it.
